Description
Anubis Maat is a character from the anime Kamigami no Asobi: Ludere deorum, where he appears as the Egyptian god of the dead and the judge of souls. As a deity, his divine responsibility is to weigh the hearts of the deceased against the feather of Maat, determining the fate of their souls. This role has given him extensive knowledge of humanity’s darker nature, witnessing cruelty and suffering that most living beings never see.
In terms of appearance, Anubis is depicted as a tall young man with an average build, brown skin, black hair, and purple eyes. Two distinct tufts of hair on his head are styled to resemble the ears of a dog or jackal, reflecting his animal-headed divine form. He typically wears a modified version of the school uniform, consisting of a black long-sleeved shirt with white geometric patterns, gray capri pants, and gold Egyptian-style sandals. Around his neck, he wears a gold collar. When he assumes his true divine form, his eyes turn gold, and he grows visible jackal ears, a tail, and claws, while his forearms and hands darken to black. He also gains ceremonial attire, including a black kilt, a headpiece with trailing strips of fabric, and various gold accessories such as a chest plate, bracelets, and a belt from which an ankh symbol hangs.
Anubis possesses a deeply mistrustful personality, particularly toward humans. Because his work as a judge involves seeing the worst aspects of human nature, he has developed a strong reluctance to engage with people. He is shy and avoids public spaces, preferring to remain hidden in the shadows or in secluded areas of the school. Despite this wariness, he has a curious side and is often described as absent-minded or scatterbrained. His most unusual characteristic is his manner of speaking: he communicates almost exclusively using a unique, repetitive language consisting of sounds like ka and barabara. Because of this, only the god Thoth is initially able to understand him. However, this is not a true language barrier but rather a condition of his trust. When Anubis genuinely accepts someone, that person becomes able to comprehend his strange speech.
Anubis holds a deep love for animals and feels far more comfortable in their presence than around people. He believes animals carry no sin, which makes them easier for him to trust. He spends much of his free time exploring outdoors, petting animals, or staying in the library with Thoth. His skills include making mummies, a craft he performs with great care and precision, and he enjoys spicy food while disliking sweet things. His limiter, the object that restrains his divine power, is a pearl jackal navel piercing.
Within the story of Kamigami no Asobi, Anubis is a secret or occasional character who is not initially part of the main group of gods attending the academy. He is the ninth student, but his nature prevents him from attending classes normally. His involvement begins when the protagonist, Yui Kusanagi, discovers him in a forest with an injured puppy. Anubis intends to kill the puppy to end its suffering and allow its soul to reincarnate into a better life, a pragmatic decision born from his role as a death deity. Yui intervenes, insisting that she can heal the animal and change its fate. Hesitant but ultimately allowing it, Anubis watches as she nurses the puppy back to health. The other gods become curious about the hidden student, and despite Anubis hissing at them defensively, they name the puppy Ka.
As Yui and the other gods care for Ka, Anubis slowly begins to warm up to them. His bond with Yui deepens through their shared attention to the puppy, and one day, when she helps him up after he trips, she suddenly finds she can understand his words. This marks a turning point: Anubis has accepted her, and he expresses his happiness. However, tragedy strikes when Ka falls ill and runs away into the forest to die alone. Anubis is devastated, feeling that Yui lied to him about being able to change the puppy's fate and that his original decision to end its suffering quickly would have been kinder. He storms off with the puppy's body and performs a mummification. In the aftermath, Yui apologizes, and the other gods join them for a funeral. Through this painful experience, Anubis comes to understand that love encompasses not only happiness but also sadness and loss. He apologizes to Yui and finally decides to attend classes with the other gods.
His key relationships include his close bond with Thoth, who serves as his translator and protector, often explaining Anubis words and feelings to others. The relationship with Yui is central to his development, as she teaches him that not all humans are cruel and that connection is worth the risk of pain. Through her influence, he becomes more open and even cheerful around those he trusts. In his romantic route, Anubis searches for a forbidden golden apple that can grant any wish. He wishes to remain with Yui forever. If they eat the fruit together, Yui is transformed into a goddess, allowing them to share eternity. If she simply accepts the fruit, they must part after graduation but promise never to forget each other, and Anubis gives her a living mummy doll named Mii or Mie for protection.
In terms of abilities, beyond his divine power to judge souls and guide the dead, Anubis demonstrates skill in mummification, a craft he performs with precision and care. His unique language, while seeming like a limitation, is actually a measure of his acceptance. He can also create small living mummy dolls, such as the one he gives to Yui, which serve as protectors. His transformation into his divine form grants him enhanced physical traits, including claws and increased mobility, allowing him to take Yui into the sky. His power is normally limited by a limiter, which breaks when his strongest wishes or emotions are unleashed.
