TV-Series
Description
Baku, also known by his Planetary Gear designation Bugbear, is a significant character introduced as the sixth and final Designer Child to be reawakened in the series. His existence is defined by a profound struggle between the life he was created for and the life he chose for himself.
Baku’s background is one of the most tragic among the Designer Children. As a child, he was a victim of human trafficking, sold into servitude and forced to work for the Asanoda yakuza family. His existence within the organization was harsh, primarily functioning as an enslaved fighter who generated income for the family in an illegal underground arena. Despite these brutal circumstances, he found a singular point of light in Kumiko Asanoda, the daughter of the yakuza boss. She treated him with kindness, and he came to view her as his savior, the person who gave him a reason to live. This deep bond became the cornerstone of his identity as Baku, to the point where he fiercely rejected his past life and memories as the Planetary Gear Bugbear when agents Amara and Moco came to reclaim him. He was unique among his peers for this active and sustained resistance, valuing the person he had become over the ancient alien existence he was meant to embody.
In terms of personality, Baku is predominantly reserved and quiet, typically only opening up to those he trusts, most notably Kumiko. His demeanor is serious and stoic, a product of his harsh life as a fighter and a slave. However, beneath this hardened exterior lies a fierce dedication and a deep well of emotion focused entirely on Kumiko's safety and well-being. He trains relentlessly to gain the strength needed to protect her, showing a fearless willingness to challenge even high-ranking members of the yakuza if they pose a threat to her. His motivation is simple yet powerful: to serve and safeguard the person who showed him compassion. This devotion is his anchor to his human identity.
The tragedy of Baku’s character is realized through the revelation of his Singularity, a unique power that allows him to restore objects to a previous state. It is eventually revealed that the yakuza family, including Kumiko, perished in an incident known as the Magus incident, where Kumiko detonated a bomb to end her father's criminal enterprises. Unwilling to let her die, Baku’s unconscious power activated, restoring them as illusion-like beings. These beings could think, feel, and regenerate from any harm, but they were not truly alive. When this truth comes to light, and Kumiko, realizing the nightmare of her existence, asks to be released, Baku is forced to let her go, watching her and the entire family disintegrate before his eyes. Consumed by grief and having lost his sole reason for living, he finally succumbs and joins the Planetary Gears, becoming the brawler Bugbear. His motivation shifts from protection to a nihilistic despair, aligning with the Gears’ goal to consume humanity.
Key relationships define his arc. His bond with Kumiko Asanoda is the most important, representing his salvation and his ultimate loss. He also has a connection with the other Planetary Gears, particularly Amara, whom he is able to fight as an equal in combat, and he is noted to have sparred with Amarok in their past lives as Gears. After his transformation, he becomes a direct opponent to Daichi Manatsu and the other Midsummer’s Knights.
In terms of abilities, Baku is an exceptionally powerful physical combatant. Even without his Gear powers, his strength and skill are superhuman; he is the undefeated champion of the underground arena, capable of defeating multiple armed men with his bare hands and sending opponents much larger than himself flying with a single strike. His combat prowess allows him to challenge Amara as an equal. His signature ability is his Singularity, which lets him restore anything to a previous state. This power is automatic and indiscriminate, meaning he cannot choose what to repair and what to leave alone. While he can use it for small tasks like repairing a torn photograph, its most dramatic manifestation is the large-scale restoration of the deceased, bringing them back as nearly invincible, regenerating illusions that will vanish instantly if his power ever fades. When his emotions become unstable, this power can also manifest as physical tremors, causing earthquakes of moderate intensity.
