Description
Hana Mutō is a central figure in the narrative, a young woman who appears to be approximately seventeen years old, though her true age is unknown due to the extraordinary circumstances of her origin. She is a striking individual with dark skin, thigh-length black hair, and bright blue eyes. Her typical attire is a simple white dress, but when she pilots a mecha, she wears a pink, skin-tight flight suit.
On the surface, Hana presents a kind, sweet, and gentle demeanor, and she is rarely seen expressing anger. However, beneath this calm exterior lies a more complex personality. When the situation demands it, she can become very serious, firm, and capable of taking control with an air of authority. While her good nature appears genuine, she is also secretive, particularly about her own capabilities and mysterious past. This secretive nature initially comes from a fear of how others might perceive her true identity. She also displays a notable lack of a nudity taboo, which surprises those around her. Hana shares a deep and strange connection with the protagonist, Daichi Manatsu, for whom she harbors romantic feelings. She is also close friends with her teammates Teppei Arashi and Akari. She has a small, blue, alien squirrel-like companion named Pitz, with whom she can communicate and whom she considers a companion rather than a pet.
Hana's background is the primary source of the story's central mystery. She was discovered by a young Daichi and Teppei in a subterranean chamber on Tanegashima Island, floating in a liquid-like sphere within a stasis field. When Daichi touched the field, she awakened. The truth is that Hana is not an ordinary human. She is an artificial lifeform, created by the alien invaders known as the KILL-T-GANG, specifically by their royal family, who possess the unique ability to control Orgone energy. She was designed as a living component for a powerful weapon or vessel known as the "Blume," intended to generate infinite energy and serve as a biological key for a life ray gun. She is referred to by the antagonists as the "Princess of Blume." Hana was created using the genetic elements of the KILL-T-GANG's royal family, making her neither truly human nor truly alien. She drifted to Earth millions of years ago and remained in stasis until her discovery.
Hana's primary motivation is her connection to Daichi, which defines her role in the story. After being awakened, she becomes a member of the Midsummer's Knights, a team operating under the organization Globe, and she pilots a mecha called the Flare Engine. She is a vital asset to the team not just as a pilot, but because of her innate abilities. As the story progresses, she becomes a target for both the KILL-T-GANG and a shadowy human group called Salty Dog, who seek to exploit her powers. A significant part of her journey involves her fear that Daichi will reject her once he learns the truth about her being an artificial being. She briefly runs away from her team out of this fear, but after being confronted by Daichi and with her friends in danger, she accepts her identity and fully awakens her abilities.
As an artificial lifeform created from the KILL-T-GANG royal family, Hana has the inherent ability to manipulate Orgone energy, the fundamental life force that powers much of the series' technology. Her most notable ability is her use of a special weapon called a Livlaster, which takes the form of a gun named the Blossom. Unlike the Livlasters used by her male counterparts, Hana must "cock" her blaster before use, releasing petal-like flakes of energy. She can summon her Livlaster to her at any time. She demonstrates the ability to not only fire powerful energy beams but also control their trajectory mid-flight, an advanced technique known as Ecdysis Mode. She is also the only one who can pilot the Blume, the ancient alien vessel for which she was originally created. Additionally, her friend Akari teaches her magic, including a spell called "Belly Button Forte," which is intended as a healing spell but has the opposite effect due to her clothing. In a critical turn of events, Hana is possessed by the rogue AI Puck, who uses her body to pilot the Blume, transforming her into a white-haired, darker version of herself known as "Dark Hana." She is eventually rescued by Daichi, who manages to break Puck's hold on her with a kiss, restoring her to her true self.
