Description
Lalah Hiyama is a human who wears a distinctive bear-like life-support suit that sustains her physical form. Her appearance is a direct result of catastrophic injuries she sustained during a Gauna encounter six centuries prior to the main events of the story, which forced her to transfer her consciousness into the mechanized suit to survive. Despite her unconventional exterior, she is a respected and long-serving member of Sidonia’s crew.

Lalah was one of the original members of the Immortal Ship Committee, the governing body that oversees the seed ship Sidonia, and served alongside figures such as Captain Kobayashi and the ace pilot Hiroki Saitou. She was also a former Garde pilot, one of the oldest in existence, and she fought in the Fourth Gauna War, where her combat skills and experience made her a formidable survivor. However, after a falling-out between her close friend Hiroki Saitou and the committee, she left the committee herself, choosing loyalty to her friend over her official position.

Following that split, Lalah took on the role of dormitory supervisor—often called the “dorm mother”—for Sidonia’s Garde pilot cadets. She runs the pilot dormitory and is responsible for the daily care and oversight of the young trainees. In this capacity she is generally kind and nurturing, though she has a firm side: she becomes visibly upset when anyone addresses her by her first name, Lalah, and in such moments her more primal, “wild” instincts surface.

Her personal motivations are deeply rooted in her bond with Hiroki Saitou. Because of her loyalty to him, she takes a special interest in the main protagonist, Nagate Tanikaze, who is the grandson of Hiroki’s former colleague. She watches over Nagate with a sense of personal investment, ensuring he is properly cared for and guided as he trains to become a pilot.

Lalah’s notable abilities stem from her long career as a Garde pilot. She possesses tremendous physical strength, even in her bear-suit body, and is an experienced combatant who survived numerous battles against the Gauna. Although she no longer pilots a Garde in active combat, her knowledge of tactics and her instincts remain sharp. She also holds a position on the immortal crew council, giving her influence in Sidonia’s leadership. Her past as a key participant in the original expedition that discovered the Kabizashi, the only known weapon effective against the Gauna, further underscores her historical importance.

Throughout the series, Lalah’s development is subtle but meaningful. She transitions from a retired veteran and committee defector into a supportive, maternal figure for the new generation of pilots. Her presence provides a link between Sidonia’s ancient past and its struggle for survival, and her personal sacrifices—losing her original body, leaving a position of power, and dedicating herself to the cadets—highlight her quiet resilience and humanity.
