TV-Series
Description
Hoshijiro Shizuka is introduced as a trainee pilot in the 628th generation of the Garde forces, holding the rank of number two among her classmates, which also makes her the deputy trainee representative. She is a young woman with an elegant appearance, characterized by a hime cut hairstyle and short hair. Her initial encounter with the protagonist, Nagate Tanikaze, occurs when he is caught trying to steal food, making her one of the first people to show him kindness.

In terms of personality, Hoshijiro is depicted as a reserved and capable individual who is serious about her duties as a pilot. She develops a significant emotional bond with Nagate, becoming his primary love interest. Her motivations are rooted in her responsibility to protect the Sidonia and her growing personal feelings for Nagate, which drive her actions and decisions.

Her role in the story becomes critically important during a mission to retrieve a weapon called a Kabizashi. When her Garde unit is hit by a Gauna’s particle cannon, she begins to drift out of control beyond the safe return limit. Nagate disobeys orders to retrieve the weapon, then goes to rescue her, resulting in both of them being stranded in space with no power. For eleven days, they drift together, and in a notable act of survival and care, Hoshijiro filters her own urine to provide Nagate with much-needed hydration when his water supply runs out. After being rescued, she is promoted to a full pilot.

Her key relationships are central to her narrative. Her connection with Nagate is the most prominent, evolving from classmates to a deep mutual affection. This creates a rivalry with Norio Kunato, a top-ranked trainee who harbors jealousy and resentment towards Nagate, believing he is entitled to both the status and the affections that Nagate receives. She also has a relationship with Izana Shinatose, who is also interested in Nagate.

The most profound development in Hoshijiro's story is her death. She is killed when she sacrifices herself to save Nagate, an event that is later revealed to be the result of a deliberate conspiracy by Norio Kunato. After her death, she is absorbed by a Gauna. This leads to a unique and horrifying transformation, as the Gauna uses her DNA and memories to create a powerful, Garde-like entity known as the Crimson Hawk Moth or Benisuzume. This creature not only mimics her form but also uses human tactics and communication, suggesting a partial absorption of her consciousness. Furthermore, a placental sample that retains the appearance of Hoshijiro is recovered and becomes the subject of scientific research, used to create new hybrid beings.

Regarding notable abilities, Hoshijiro is a highly skilled and intelligent pilot, demonstrated by her top-two ranking in the trainee class. Even in death, her legacy persists in the abilities of the Gauna that copies her. This entity displays advanced tactical thinking and the capacity for emotional expression, and it can regenerate while temporarily regaining fragments of its human memories, making it a formidable and tragic adversary.
