Description
Ichiro Seii is a seasoned senior guardian pilot aboard the giant seed ship Sidonia. He is a figure of significant experience and authority, recognizable by his tall stature, white hair, and blue eyes. In the manga, he is additionally distinguished by an old-fashioned helmet that covers most of his face, while in the anime he typically wears the standard crew uniform or a pilot's skin suit.

Seii begins his on-screen duties not as a frontline fighter, but as the executive officer and battle commander aide to the ship's captain. In this capacity, he works within the Combat Information Center, directing personnel and delegating officers during military operations, though all major tactical decisions require the captain's final approval. He also serves as an instructor at the Sidonia Defense Force academy, where he teaches courses on tactics and Gauna, the primary enemy of humanity, helping to groom the next generation of guardians.

Despite his competence as a tactician, Seii's true passion lies on the battlefield. Early in the story, he encounters Gauna 487 during a mining mission, an experience that initially leaves him paralyzed with fear. This event, however, does not deter him. He eventually makes the pivotal decision to step down from his command position to return to active combat as a dedicated Garde pilot. Recognizing the superior tactical aptitude of the young officer Yuhata Midorikawa, Seii formally recommends her as his successor for the executive officer role. He then takes command of his own unit, designated as unit 026, where he flies as a full-time pilot.

As a person, Seii is defined by a calm and cautious demeanor. He pays close attention to both events and the people around him, demonstrating a sharp situational awareness. This cool exterior is paired with considerable bravery; he is willing to sacrifice his own life to protect Sidonia, a trait he proves during several high-stakes operations. One of the most notable of these is the attack on the Large Mass Union Ship. In that desperate battle, Seii led his squad into a meat grinder that resulted in the deaths of 38 out of 48 pilots under his command. Despite the horrific losses, the mission was a strategic success, as his squad eliminated over 200 Gauna and saved Sidonia from destruction.

Seii's role in the story is largely that of a seasoned veteran who helps to lead and guide the younger, more prodigious pilots. He shares a particularly important relationship with the protagonist, Nagate Tanikaze. While the captain is often at odds with Seii over strategic decisions—with Seii preferring more direct engagement—Seii takes on a mentoring role toward Nagate. He helps to refine and bring out Nagate's unique and distinctive fighting style when piloting the Garde model Tsugumori. Beyond his professional relationships, he shares a deeper personal connection with fellow pilot Samari Ittan. This relationship eventually evolves, resulting in them having several children together. He also displays a mischievous or pragmatic side, as he was the one who originated a rumor that Samari Ittan would "photosynthesize" with high-performing male pilots as a form of morale-boosting reward, a lie that reportedly helped increase the pilots' combat effectiveness.
