Description
Majin Boo is a significant character who serves as the final major antagonist in the original run of the anime Dragon Ball Z Kai. The character is an ancient, magical being whose origins are tied to the universe's primordial forces, having existed for millions of years. He was initially utilized as a tool of destruction by the wizard Bibidi, who later sealed him away within a specialized ball. Bibidi was eventually killed by the Supreme Kai, leaving Bou dormant on Earth until he was revived by Bibidi's son, Babidi, during the events of the series.
The character’s personality is complex and varies dramatically depending on his form. The first version seen, often referred to as Fat Buu, possesses a childlike and innocent demeanor. He is playful, impulsive, and driven by simple desires such as eating sweets and having fun. This Buu is not inherently malicious but has been taught by Babidi that destruction and killing are acceptable forms of entertainment. In stark contrast, the original form, known as Kid Buu, is a pure, unfettered incarnation of chaos. Kid Buu has no capacity for reason or empathy; his only motivation is destruction for its own sake, and his actions are completely unpredictable and savage. Between these two extremes exists Super Buu, a form born from the dominance of the evil within Fat Buu. Super Buu is more intelligent and calculating than Kid Buu, exhibiting a cruel and sadistic sense of humor while still retaining a core of pure evil.
Majin Buu's role in the story is that of an apocalyptic threat. After being released, he systematically challenges the Earth's defenders, including Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan. His primary motivation is simple: to fight powerful opponents and cause mayhem. Under Babidi's control, he follows orders to kill, but after killing the wizard himself, he acts on his own whims, eradicating entire cities and eventually all of humanity with a single attack. His actions force the heroes to seek new methods of combat, including the Fusion technique, and culminate in a final battle on the Supreme Kai's sacred world.
Key relationships define Buu's development throughout the saga. His relationship with Babidi is one of master and servant, though Buu quickly grows tired of being bossed around and ultimately kills him. The most significant relationship is with the human champion Mr. Satan. Mr. Satan, through a combination of luck, bravery, and genuine kindness, befriends the innocent Fat Buu. This friendship becomes crucial, as Mr. Satan teaches Buu that killing is wrong and successfully convinces him to stop his rampage. This bond is what allows the good version of Buu to survive as a separate entity after the evil within him is expunged. Other key relationships include his battles and absorptions of powerful fighters like Gotenks and Gohan, which he uses to increase his own power dramatically.
The character undergoes a fascinating transformation and development. The Fat Buu seen at the beginning is a corrupted version, having been influenced by the evil wizard. After an intense rage, Buu splits into a good version and a pure evil version, who then consumes the good Buu to become Super Buu. Over the course of battles, Super Buu absorbs several heroes, drastically changing his appearance and power. Finally, when all absorbed fighters are removed from his body, he reverts to his original form, Kid Buu. After Kid Buu is destroyed by Goku's Spirit Bomb, the good Fat Buu (who was separated before the final battle) is allowed to continue living on Earth, now a fully established ally of the Dragon Team, living with Mr. Satan and participating in later tournaments.
Majin Buu possesses a unique set of notable abilities that make him nearly invincible in combat. His body is highly malleable, allowing him to stretch, contort, and survive any physical damage. His most famous power is his regeneration; he can reform his body from even a vapor cloud, making most physical attacks useless. He also has a transmutation beam that can turn any object or person into anything he desires, most commonly into chocolate or cookies, which he then eats to trap them. Perhaps his most dangerous ability is absorption, where he envelops a person with his own flesh, incorporating their power, knowledge, and physical characteristics into his own, becoming a more formidable version of himself. Coupled with his immense strength, which far surpasses standard Super Saiyan 2 levels, and his ability to learn techniques after seeing them once, Majin Buu is one of the most formidable beings in the universe.
