TV-Series
Description
Majin Buu is a central antagonist and later an uneasy ally from the later segments of Dragon Ball Z Kai. His origins differ from most other villains in the series, as he is not a being who trained to achieve power but rather a primordial force of destruction. He was created millions of years ago by the magical warlock Bibidi, though it is later clarified that Bibidi did not truly create Buu from nothing but rather knew the means to awaken him. Buu is a genie-like, magical entity whose true nature is chaotic and unpredictable. His raw power is immense, surpassing nearly every fighter introduced before him, including the Supreme Kais, several of whom he killed or absorbed.
The personality of Majin Buu changes drastically over his various forms. The first major form seen is fat Buu, a rotund, childlike pink creature who is initially playful, gluttonous, and emotionally volatile. He experiences the world through simple pleasures like eating sweets and turning people into chocolate or clay with his magical candy beam. His emotional range is that of a toddler: when happy, he is relatively docile and can even show affection, but when angered or denied what he wants, he becomes a terrifying and ruthless killer. Later, after expelling his negative energy, a thinner, more physically imposing form known as evil Buu emerges. This version is cunning, sadistic, and purely malevolent, lacking the innocence of the fat Buu. Eventually, evil Buu absorbs fat Buu and transforms into super Buu, a taller, more muscular version who retains the evil personality but adds a measure of cold intelligence and cruel humor. Finally, after absorbing the powerful fighters Gotenks and Piccolo, and later Gohan, super Buu becomes even more dangerous. His final and most primal form is kid Buu, a smaller, more compact version of the original evil Buu. Kid Buu is pure chaos incarnate—unpredictable, lacking any reasoning or restraint, and driven by an instinctual need to destroy everything. He does not speak much, laughs maniacally, and destroys planets as casually as a human might swat a fly.
Majin Buu’s motivations are not complex in most forms. Fat Buu wants to eat, play, and avoid boredom, but he follows the commands given to him by the wizard Babidi, Bibidi’s son, who has revived him. However, Buu soon rebels against Babidi after being ordered to kill his new friend, a blind boy named Mr. Satan. This shows that even in his simple state, Buu values companionship and respect over control. Evil Buu and super Buu desire to test their strength, humiliate opponents, and cause suffering. Kid Buu wants only annihilation, with no goal beyond destruction itself.
In the story of Dragon Ball Z Kai, Majin Buu serves as the final and most overwhelming threat to Earth and the universe. After being revived by Babidi to conquer the galaxy, Buu quickly proves too strong for even the mightiest heroes, including Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan. The Z Fighters are forced into desperate measures, including the fusion dance and the Potara earrings, to stand a chance against him. Buu’s role shifts when the heroes cannot kill him outright; they must instead find a way to remove his absorbed victims, returning him to a more manageable form. Ultimately, Goku destroys kid Buu with a Spirit Bomb fueled by the energy of all Earth’s people, a solution enabled by Buu’s own earlier rampage uniting the planet.
Key relationships define Buu’s development. His bond with Mr. Satan, the self-proclaimed world champion who is actually weak in comparison, is the most significant. Mr. Satan befriends fat Buu through kindness and treats him like a pet or a child, and Buu in turn protects him fiercely. After Buu is reincarnated as a good being named Uub at the end of the series, this relationship sets up a future where Buu’s essence becomes a heroic fighter trained by Goku. Buu also has a complex relationship with Babidi, who sees him as a tool; Buu kills Babidi without hesitation once he no longer wishes to obey. His rivalry with Vegeta is notable, as Vegeta sacrifices himself in an attempt to destroy fat Buu, and later, as kid Buu, Vegeta acknowledges Buu as pure evil while fighting alongside Goku.
Notable abilities of Majin Buu are vast and magical in nature. His body is made of a strange, rubbery pink substance that is nearly indestructible and can regenerate from any physical damage, including being blown to pieces or vaporized, as long as even the smallest part of him remains. He can stretch and morph his body parts for combat or surprise attacks. His most famous technique is the candy beam, which turns anything—living or dead—into a food item like chocolate or an egg, which he then eats. He can heal others by touching them, a trait inherited from a Grand Supreme Kai he absorbed long ago. Buu can also absorb living beings into his body, gaining their power, knowledge, and physical traits, as seen when he absorbs Gotenks, Piccolo, and Gohan. He can create smaller versions of himself from his goo that fight independently. In his kid Buu form, he can destroy entire planets with a single, casual energy ball. He can also teleport by sensing energy, a skill he learns from observing Goku and Vegeta. Despite his seemingly simple mind, Buu’s raw power and regenerative abilities make him one of the most formidable beings in the Dragon Ball universe.
