Description
Dabra is a major antagonist from the Majin Buu Saga. He is known as the King of the Demon Realm, a position that denotes him as the most powerful and evil being in that dark dimension. Before his introduction, he had already conquered many worlds, but he eventually fell under the mental control of the wicked wizard Babidi, becoming his most powerful and loyal servant.

In terms of personality, Dabra is portrayed as highly intelligent, perceptive, and sophisticated. Unlike many of Babidi's other henchmen, he is a strategist who provides his master with sound tactical advice, such as luring the Z-Warriors into the spaceship rather than attacking them all at once. He possesses a great deal of pride in his power as the Demon King and can be quite sadistic, but he is also practical and recognizes threats. For instance, while fighting Gohan, he quickly assesses Vegeta's inner turmoil and dark heart, correctly identifying the Saiyan prince as a better candidate to serve Babidi than to simply kill. When the creature Majin Buu is finally awakened, Dabra is initially disappointed, viewing the fat, childlike being as useless and insulting him, a decision he soon regrets.

Dabra’s primary motivation is to serve Babidi’s goal of reviving Majin Buu, largely due to the mind control placed upon him. He acts to collect the energy necessary for Buu’s revival by forcing the heroes to fight inside Babidi’s ship. However, upon seeing Buu, his motivation shifts briefly to survival and warning, as he realizes that the creature is far too powerful and unpredictable for even Babidi to control.

His role in the story is that of a major obstacle and a catalyst for the saga’s events. After Babidi kills his minions Spopovich and Yamu, Dabra is unleashed on the heroes. He immediately demonstrates his threat level by killing the Supreme Kai’s attendant, Kibito, with a single energy blast. He then uses his signature ability, his Stone Spit, to turn Piccolo and Krillin into stone statues, forcing Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan to pursue him into Babidi’s spaceship to save their friends, as only Dabra’s death can reverse the petrification. Inside, he engages in a significant battle with Gohan. While Gohan is a Super Saiyan 2, his power has diminished from lack of training, allowing Dabra to gain the upper hand through a combination of raw strength and magic, pushing him to his limits. It is during this fight that Goku comments Dabra’s power is roughly comparable to that of Perfect Cell from the previous saga.

Dabra also notably observes Vegeta’s willingness to be controlled for the sake of fighting Goku, leading to the demonic possession of Vegeta, which in turn provides the final burst of energy needed to awaken Buu. Once Buu is released, Dabra is brutally overpowered. Buu shrugs off his attacks, turns him into a cookie, and eats him, leading to the demon king’s death. With Dabra’s death, Krillin and Piccolo are returned to normal.

After dying, Dabra experiences an unusual form of character development. Because he was so thoroughly evil, the ruler of the afterlife, Enma Daio, judged that sending him to Hell would be a reward rather than a punishment. Consequently, he was sent to Heaven. In the anime adaptation, this peaceful environment completely reforms him, turning him into a gentle, kind-hearted, and even somewhat effeminate being who enjoys peace and wears flowers in his hair. In this state, he is shown interacting positively with characters like Chi-Chi, Bulma, and Videl in the Other World.

Dabra possesses several notable abilities that make him a formidable fighter. His most famous technique is his Stone Spit, which instantly petrifies any living being it touches, with the effect only ending upon his death. He can also breathe fire and launch fireballs from his mouth. Using his demonic magic, he has the power to materialize weapons out of thin air, most notably the "Darkness Sword" and a magical spear. Beyond these magical tricks, he is a powerful physical fighter capable of manipulating ki, flying, and matching a Super Saiyan 2 in combat. He has the ability to sense the evil within a person's heart and can enter a meditative state to further focus and amplify his power, a form sometimes called "Demonic Will".
