Description
North Kaiō, also referred to as the North King of Worlds, is a divine figure from the anime Dragon Ball Z Kai who presides over the North Area of Universe 7, the quadrant that contains Earth and Namek. He is a deity responsible for overseeing the events within his region and possesses vast knowledge of the universe, martial arts, and spiritual energy. His appearance is distinctive, with blue skin, a pair of antennae protruding from his head, and round sunglasses. He resides on a small planet that has a gravity ten times that of Earth, located at the end of the serpentine road known as Snake Way, alongside his companions, a monkey named Bubbles and a cricket-like insect named Gregory.

North Kaiō is defined by his eccentric and jovial personality. He has a deep love for comedy and considers himself a master of puns and jokes, often insisting that those who wish to learn from him must first make him laugh. Despite this humorous and sometimes childish demeanor, he is a brilliant and experienced martial arts mentor. His training methods are unconventional and reflect his playful nature, such as requiring a student to catch Bubbles in order to acclimate to the elevated gravity of his planet. He is quick to frustration with those who do not appreciate his humor or who act impulsively, but he genuinely cares for his students and takes pride in their growth.

His primary motivation is to protect his quadrant from threats that exceed the capabilities of its inhabitants. When the Saiyans Vegeta and Nappa are poised to invade Earth, North Kaiō takes on Goku as a student after the hero dies in battle against Raditz and makes the journey along Snake Way. He recognizes the severity of the danger and dedicates himself to preparing Goku for the coming conflict. Throughout the series, he continues to monitor events on Earth and other planets using his telepathic abilities, offering guidance and information to the Z Fighters whenever possible.

The role of North Kaiō in the story is that of a wise but unorthodox teacher and an invaluable ally from the celestial realm. He instructs Goku in two of the most significant techniques in the series. The first is the Kaioken, a method that temporarily multiplies the user's power at the risk of immense strain on the body. The second is the Spirit Bomb, an ultimate technique that gathers energy from all living beings, the planet, and even the sun to create a massive sphere of destructive force. These abilities become essential in battles against Vegeta, Frieza, and later Majin Boo. Beyond training, he serves as a source of counsel and information, using his antennae to see distant events and to communicate telepathically across vast distances.

His key relationship is with Goku, whom he trains following the battle with Raditz. Although he often becomes irritated by Goku's carefree attitude and unpredictable decisions, he develops a strong mutual respect and fondness for his pupil. He also interacts with other Z Fighters on occasion, providing them with advice or relaying critical intelligence. North Kaiō maintains connections with the other Kais and divine figures within the hierarchy of Universe 7, and he occasionally convenes with them to observe major cosmic events.

North Kaiō undergoes notable development after a turning point during the Cell Saga. When Cell threatens to self-destruct and destroy Earth, Goku uses his teleportation technique to carry Cell to North Kaiō's planet. The resulting explosion kills both Goku and North Kaiō, as well as Bubbles and Gregory. Despite this death, North Kaiō continues to exist in the afterlife and remains an active participant in the story. He retains his halo and his position, continuing to assist the heroes from the Other World. He is instrumental in the final battle against Majin Boo, participating in the creation of the Spirit Bomb that eventually defeats the villain. His death does not diminish his influence, and he persists as a reliable source of wisdom and support.

Among his notable abilities, North Kaiō possesses telepathy, allowing him to communicate with individuals across different planets and realms. His antennae grant him the power to observe faraway locations. He is also capable of creating durable yet lightweight clothing, as demonstrated when he produces a new gi for Goku. While he is not a frontline combatant compared to the series' strongest warriors, his martial arts knowledge and technical mastery are exceptional. He created the Kaioken and the Spirit Bomb, techniques that are among the most iconic in the Dragon Ball universe. His planet's tenfold gravity, combined with his rigorous training regimen, pushes his students to physical and spiritual limits that few can endure. Despite his comedic exterior, North Kaiō is a figure of great responsibility and deep knowledge, representing the guiding force that helps shape the heroes who defend his quadrant.
