Movie
Description
Soramaru Kumo, the second son of the Kumo household, has short, messy black hair with a single red-tipped bang and dark eyes that shift to a reddish hue when agitated. He typically dresses in a blend of traditional samurai attire and a modern hoodie, all in black and red and marked with his family’s symbol. He carries the Kumo family swords, entrusted to him by his older brother, Tenka.

The most serious and responsible of the three siblings, Soramaru often apologizes on Tenka’s behalf. He holds deep admiration for his older brother, viewing him as both a beloved protector and a wall to overcome. Driven to become stronger and be seen as an equal, Soramaru suppresses his emotions, refusing even to weep after Tenka’s execution to avoid a sense of weakness. He harbors a strong aversion to being touched on the neck, a remnant of childhood trauma.

Born into the Kumo family, Soramaru was raised by his mother while his father and Tenka trained to fight the Orochi. One winter night, a mysterious Fuuma ninja massacred his parents. During the attack, Soramaru witnessed the murders and was choked by the assailant, an experience that left lasting psychological scars. Tenka shielded him from a blade, earning a prominent scar. In the aftermath, Tenka vowed to protect his younger brothers above all. He later brought Shirasu Kinjou into the family, who was accepted as one of their own.

In his quest to prove his strength, Soramaru often acts recklessly. He disobeys Tenka to duel a ronin, which leads to him being strangled and reliving his past trauma. Determined to surpass his brother, he infiltrates Gokumonjo prison to learn swordsmanship from Sousei, commander of the Yamainu. There, a masked man triggers his full memory of the murder night, revealing the attacker as Shirasu. Overcome with rage, Soramaru attacks but is overpowered and loses consciousness.

After Tenka’s apparent execution, Chuutarou’s disappearance, and Shirasu’s betrayal, Soramaru’s mental state fractures under the weight of negative emotion, making him the true vessel of the Orochi. Fully possessed, he is later freed when Nishiki, Chuutarou, and Tenka use Abe no Sousei’s katana to separate the serpent from him. He joins the final battle to destroy the Orochi.

Soramaru deeply admires Tenka, seeing him as both rival and guardian. He feels protective of his younger brother Chuutarou, with whom he shares a bond of mutual care. He once respected Shirasu as a second older brother, addressing him as “Shirasu-san,” and is profoundly shaken to learn of his betrayal and role in their parents’ murder. He first meets Nishiki at Gokumonjo, where she is disguised as a guard. He shows protectiveness toward her, and she develops fondness and eventual romantic feelings. The third movie’s end credits show them married.

In the Gaiden story, *Donten ni Warau Gaiden: Oka, Tenbo no Kakehashi*, Soramaru and his brothers discover that banned human experiments tied to the Orochi are being conducted by ex-Yamainu members seeking to resurrect the serpent. The brothers unite once more to battle this military conspiracy.

Notable quotes include Soramaru declaring his intent to become Tenka’s equal, introducing himself to Kotarou as an agent of vengeance, reflecting on the strangeness of siblings, calling Shirasu a reliable older brother, advocating for hope and perseverance, admitting to fractured memories and his bond with the Orochi, begging Sousei to kill him to stop the serpent, and confessing conflicted desires to see Shirasu again despite being unable to forgive.

The “Sora” in his name means “sky.”
