Description
Dai Kaioshin, also known as the Grand Supreme Kai, is a deity who served as the highest-ranking of the five Supreme Kais in Universe 7. He held authority over the four cardinal Supreme Kais, including the North, South, West, and East Kais, with the latter being the character known as Shin. His physical appearance is distinctive: he is a large, heavyset figure with a kindly face, a prominent mohawk-style hairstyle, and pointed ears. He wears the traditional attire of a Supreme Kai, which includes a black vest with gold trim, a violet cape, and the Potara earrings that signify his divine status.
In terms of personality, Dai Kaioshin is portrayed as exceptionally benevolent, gentle, and peace-loving. Unlike many cosmic rulers in the Dragon Ball universe, his character is defined by his kindness and a notable love for food. These traits are so profound that they would later have a significant impact on one of the universe’s greatest threats. His core motivation is the protection of the universe and his fellow deities, a sense of duty that leads him to make great personal sacrifices.
Dai Kaioshin's role in the story is deeply tied to two of the most ancient and dangerous conflicts in Universe 7's history. Approximately ten million years before the main events of the series, a powerful magical creature named Moro threatened the cosmos. In a desperate battle, Dai Kaioshin and the South Supreme Kai confronted the monster, and the Grand Supreme Kai ultimately used a powerful and dangerous sealing technique called the Kai Kai Matoru to seal away Moro's magic. This act, however, cost him the vast majority of his divine power, leaving him permanently weakened.
His most consequential role came five million years later, during the initial rampage of the original pure Majin Buu. After Buu had already killed two of the Supreme Kais and absorbed the South Supreme Kai, Dai Kaioshin bravely intervened to protect the young East Supreme Kai, Shin. The weakened Grand Supreme Kai was no match for the creature and was absorbed by Majin Buu. This absorption had a transformative effect, as Buu inherited the pure-hearted and docile nature of Dai Kaioshin. This caused the demon to transform into the rotund, childlike, and significantly less violent version of Majin Buu, suppressing his uncontrollable lust for destruction and making him more obedient.
The key relationship in Dai Kaioshin’s history is his connection to Majin Buu and, by extension, Shin. His sacrifice directly saved Shin’s life, allowing the youngest Supreme Kai to survive into the modern era. More profoundly, his essence lived on inside Buu, acting as a parasitic but pacifying influence. This is the reason the fat Majin Buu, known as Mr. Buu, exists as a separate, good-hearted being after the events of the Buu saga. For a long time, the Grand Supreme Kai’s consciousness remained dormant within this good Buu.
The character experiences a significant development later in the story, during the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc. The remnants of his power and his sealed memories are reawakened within Mr. Buu by the Galactic Patrol. In this state, Dai Kaioshin’s personality and appearance can temporarily resurface, allowing him to take control of Buu’s body. He confronts Moro once again, but discovers that the majority of his remaining divine energy had been retained by the original Kid Buu upon the demon’s split, and had since passed to Kid Buu’s reincarnation, a human boy named Uub. Ultimately, Dau Kaioshin is able to channel his and Uub’s divine power to the Saiyan warrior Goku, enabling him to achieve a complete version of Ultra Instinct and finally defeat Moro for good. After this final battle, his consciousness returns to its dormant state within Mr. Buu.
Despite his depleted state in his later appearances, Dau Kaioshin was once an immensely powerful deity. At his peak, he possessed tremendous magical and divine power, sufficient to challenge and seal a being like Moro. While lost to time, he also demonstrated notable abilities in the anime, including a technique known as the Daikaioshin Retsuzan, a powerful energy blast fired from the mouth, and the ability to create potent defensive ki barriers. However, his most significant and lasting ability proved to be not one of destruction, but of influence: his overwhelming goodness, which fundamentally altered the nature of the dreaded Majin Buu.
