Description
Freed Justine is a prominent member of the Fairy Tail guild and serves as the self-proclaimed leader of the Raijinshuu, also known as the Thunder God Tribe or Thunder Legion, a specialized team that originally acted as the personal guard for the powerful mage Laxus Dreyar. He is a tall, lean young man of twenty years with pale skin, long light-green hair tied back in a ponytail, and greenish-blue eyes. A distinctive beauty mark is located beneath his left eye, while his Fairy Tail guild emblem, colored green, is on the back of his left hand. His typical attire reflects an eighteenth-century nobleman, consisting of a long red double-breasted coat with white details, a cravat, dark trousers, white boots, and a belt that holds a sheathed rapier-style sword.
Freed is generally a calm, quiet, and composed individual who does not socialize extensively within the guild, having been absent for half a year before the series' main events and thus unfamiliar with newer members like Lucy Heartfilia. This reserved nature, combined with the mysterious nature of his magic, has led him to be considered one of the guild's "Mystery Men," alongside Gildarts Clive and Mystogan. While normally level-headed and coldly strategic, his personality undergoes a dramatic shift when it comes to Laxus, towards whom he holds an intense, almost childlike admiration and fanatical loyalty. He becomes overly emotional in matters concerning Laxus, even crying on his behalf, a behavior his teammate Bickslow often comments on as unusual. Despite his intimidating aura, he cares deeply for his comrades and has a strong sense of honor, notably going out of his way to repay debts and feeling genuine remorse for his actions when they conflict with his sense of camaraderie.
Freed's primary motivation throughout much of the story is his profound loyalty to Laxus Dreyar. Originally, the guild master Makarov tasked Freed with keeping an eye on the reckless Laxus, but Freed's devotion led him to abandon this mission in favor of following Laxus's every order. This unchecked loyalty served as the driving force behind his role as the primary strategist of the Fairy Tail Battle arc, where he used his magic to trap his guildmates and force them to fight each other in a bid to help Laxus take over the guild. He was willing to harm his fellow members for Laxus's sake, although he later showed doubt and sadness when ordered to kill them. His defeat at the hands of Mirajane Strauss, who reminded him of their bond as guildmates, caused him to break down in tears, confess he did not want to continue the fight, and ultimately betray Laxus by revealing the truth about the Fairy Law spell. This event serves as a major turning point, shifting his motivations from blind loyalty to a more balanced sense of responsibility towards the guild. After Laxus's temporary expulsion, Freed shaved his head as a sign of atonement for his actions. His later role in the story sees him fighting to protect his guild and comrades, while still serving as a steadfast and crucial ally to Laxus after his return.
Key relationships heavily define Freed's character. His bond with Laxus is the most significant, evolving from a master-servant dynamic of extreme reverence to a more mutual, professional respect as they fight alongside each other as equals in the Thunder God Tribe. He is also very close with his two Raijinshuu teammates, Evergreen and Bickslow, with whom he has fought for years; the trio works together seamlessly in battle and shares a deep understanding. His relationship with Mirajane Strauss is notable, as she was the one who defeated him and broke through his misguided loyalty, leading to a mutual respect between the two S-Class level mages. Through his redemption, he also mends his ties with the rest of the guild, transforming from an isolated enforcer to a trusted protector.
Freed's role in the story is that of a powerful, tactical mage who is often deployed for critical missions. He is considered to have S-Class level abilities. After the Fairy Tail Battle arc, he remains a key member of the guild, participating in the fight against Grimoire Heart on Tenrou Island, where he and Bickslow defeated the powerful mage Rustyrose and later stood against the black dragon Acnologia. He later takes part in the battles against the dark guild Tartaros, where he and the Thunder God Tribe fought against the Demon Gate member Tempester, an encounter that left him severely poisoned by magia barrier particles until Laxus sacrificed himself to save him. He also fought during the conflict with the Alvarez Empire, and his expertise with runes even provided Laxus with a technique to defeat one of the Spriggan 12. In the sequel, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, he continues to act as a member of the Thunder God Tribe, using his magic to support the guild in battle against enemies like the Wood God Dragon.
Freed is a magic swordsman who combines physical combat with two unique forms of Letter Magic. His primary ability is Dark Écriture, a powerful type of Eye Magic that allows him to write runes in the air with his sword or finger to produce various effects. These effects can be offensive, such as inflicting "Pain," "Fear," or "Suffering" on a target; self-buffing, such as writing "Wings" on himself to fly; or defensive, such as writing "Reflect" to send projectiles back at an attacker. His most powerful Dark Écriture technique is the forbidden spell "Darkness" or "Absolute Shadow," which transforms his body into a large, demonic creature. This form greatly enhances his physical strength, speed, and durability, and grants him access to additional dark magic attacks like Darkness Flare Bomb.
In addition to Dark Écriture, Freed is a master of Jutsu Shiki, also referred to as "Barrier Magic" or "Runes." This magic allows him to pre-set traps by inscribing runes to define an area with absolute rules. Anyone entering the area is bound by these rules, such as "people who use magic will suffocate" or "people wearing armor cannot leave," and cannot break them regardless of their magical power. While this magic requires significant preparation time to set up a large area, making it less useful in spontaneous fights, it is an ideal ability for strategic defense and trapping opponents, and was the main tool employed during the Fairy Tail Battle.
