Description
Meldy, whose name is also spelled Meredy, is a character who first appears as an antagonist in the Fairy Tail series before undergoing a significant personal transformation. Her early life was marked by tragedy when the village she lived in was destroyed, an act that claimed the lives of her parents and everyone she knew. In the aftermath of this devastation, she was found by Ultear Milkovich, a mage from the dark guild Grimoire Heart. Despite Ultear's involvement in the village's destruction, she recognized the young girl's latent magical potential and brought her into the guild. Unaware of Ultear's role in her past trauma, Meldy grew up viewing her as a surrogate mother and formed a deep, unwavering attachment to her.

Within Grimoire Heart, Meldy was trained by the guild master, Hades, to master a unique form of Lost Magic called Maguilty Sense. Her power and dedication led her to become one of the Seven Kin of Purgatory, an elite group of the guild's strongest wizards. During her initial appearances, particularly during the battle on Tenrou Island, Meldy's personality is notably dual-sided. When on a mission, she adopts a stoic, mature, and almost robotic demeanor. She refers to her objective of exterminating her enemies as her prime directive and coldly assigns numerical rankings to the members of Fairy Tail, prioritizing her targets. In combat, this coldness can give way to a cocky arrogance, where she dismisses those she considers weak as trash.

However, this ruthless exterior masks a much more vulnerable and childlike true nature. This side of her emerges in moments of excitement or insecurity, such as when she eagerly spots Tenrou Island from the Grimoire Heart airship or when she hangs her head in shame after being scolded by Ultear. She is fiercely passionate and determined for someone of her age, to the point of being willing to sacrifice her own life to protect the person she loves.

Her role in the story becomes pivotal during the conflict on Tenrou Island. There, she battles Juvia Lockser and Erza Scarlet. Using her Maguilty Sense magic, she creates a Sensory Link between Juvia and Gray Fullbuster, forcing them to share any pain inflicted on each other. Driven by a misguided belief that Gray was the cause of Ultear's suffering, Meldy escalates the fight by linking herself to both of them and attempts to commit suicide, a plan that would kill Gray as well. This plan is thwarted by Juvia, who physically embraces Meldy. Through their sensory link, Juvia transmits not just pain, but her own powerful emotions and memories, showing Meldy that she has a right to live and love. Overwhelmed by this unfamiliar feeling of genuine compassion, Meldy abandons the fight and severs the link.

This event is the catalyst for her character development. After learning the truth about Ultear destroying her village, and after Ultear herself attempts to atone, Meldy chooses to forgive her, solidifying their bond. Following the seven-year disappearance of Fairy Tail's main team, Meldy co-founds the independent guild Crime Sorcière alongside Jellal Fernandes and Ultear, dedicated to atoning for their past crimes by hunting down dark guilds and Zeref's demons. In this new role, her personality softens considerably. She becomes cheerful, modest, and even playful, developing a witty sense of humor. She is shown teasing Gray and Lucy with her Sensory Link magic and mocking Jellal for his deceptions.

Her key relationships drive much of her arc. Her bond with Ultear is the most significant, as she evolves from a devoted follower to a loving, forgiving daughter figure. Her former enemy Juvia becomes a close friend and powerful ally, with whom she can perform combination attacks called Unison Raids. She also works closely with Jellal as a founding member of Crime Sorcière.

Meldy's notable abilities center entirely on her Lost Magic, Maguilty Sense. This magic allows her to link the senses of two or more people, creating a connection marked by a heart-shaped seal. The primary function of this link is pain transference; any physical harm suffered by one individual is felt by all others connected. It is later revealed that the magic also connects emotions, a fact Meldy herself did not initially understand. She can use a variation called Three Spread Sensory Link to connect herself to linked targets, threatening a shared death. For direct offense, she can manifest sensory blades with spells like Maguilty Sodom, which directly strike a target's sense of pain, and Maguilty Rays, which are projectile attacks. In later storylines, her understanding of her magic deepens to the point where she can use Sensory Links to combine magical power with other wizards, amplifying spells on a massive scale, such as when she connects dozens of mages across a continent to power the Fairy Sphere spell against the dragon Acnologia.
