Description
Soramaru Kumo, born May 5th, is the second son of the Kumo house. He possesses short, messy black hair featuring a distinctive red-tipped bang; his eyes shift reddish when agitated. Standing 165 cm tall and weighing 53 kg, he typically wears the traditional Kumo family attire: a hooded samurai-style garment predominantly in black and red, bearing the family symbol. He carries the family's twin swords, entrusted by his older brother Tenka, though their blades are rusted and non-functional.
Compared to his siblings, Soramaru exhibits a serious and responsible demeanor. He often apologizes for Tenka's antics and feels a strong compulsion to protect his younger brother, Chuutarou. Driven by an intense desire to surpass Tenka, whom he perceives as an unattainable wall of strength, he trains relentlessly yet grapples with deep-seated inadequacy. He suppresses his emotions to avoid perceived weakness, notably refusing to cry after Tenka's execution. A severe aversion to neck touches and recurring memory lapses stem from a traumatic childhood event where he witnessed his parents' murder by a Fuuma ninja who strangled him. Tenka intervened, shielding Soramaru from a fatal sword strike that scarred Tenka's back, and subsequently vowed to prioritize his brothers' well-being. Shirasu later joined the family, becoming a respected older brother figure. Soramaru is skilled at cooking and manages household finances.
His determination to prove himself leads him to infiltrate Gokumonjo prison undercover, seeking swordsmanship training from Sousei. There, an encounter with a masked inmate triggers repressed memories, confirming Shirasu as his parents' killer. This revelation causes significant mental destabilization. Following Tenka's execution and Shirasu's betrayal, Soramaru's unresolved trauma and negative emotions culminate in him becoming the true vessel for the demon Orochi. Orochi's possession manifests through blackouts and violent nighttime attacks he cannot recall. During Orochi's awakening, Shirasu and his twin brother swear loyalty to the entity within Soramaru. The Orochi fully overtakes him until Nishiki, Chuutarou, and Tenka separate the demon using the sacred Kumo sword and Abe no Sousei's katana.
Post-possession, Soramaru reconciles his conflicted feelings toward Shirasu, acknowledging him as "another older brother" while stating he cannot forgive him. He develops a protective relationship with Nishiki, a Fuuma clan member he meets at Gokumonjo, who grows fond of him; they eventually marry. Following the Orochi's defeat, Soramaru becomes the head of the Kumo household.
Key quotes reflect his struggles: "In my heart is always the image of Aniki’s back… I have to stop watching his back and be his equal," and "No matter who it is, everybody worries… But even so, we live on because we hope for a day when we can smile again." His name "Soramaru" includes "Sora" (空), meaning "sky."
