Description
Ayumu Kominato is a supporting character in the Selector Infected WIXOSS anime, primarily known as the older brother of the main protagonist, Ruuko Kominato. He is a male of average height with a mid-to-late teenage appearance, characterized by his messy brown hair and brown eyes. His typical outfit consists of a white collared shirt beneath a green sweater, brown pants, and grey socks, though he is also seen wearing a black biker outfit.
Ayumu has a deep-seated care for his family, particularly his younger sister Ruuko and his grandmother Hatsu. He is attuned to his grandmother’s worries and often acts as her spokesperson, conveying her concerns to Ruuko when she cannot bring herself to do so. One of his primary concerns is Ruuko’s social isolation and lack of friends, which motivates a key action in the story. At the suggestion of a work friend, he purchases a White Hope WIXOSS starter deck from the Card Luck shop and gives it to Ruuko as a gift, hoping that playing the card game will help her connect with other people her age. This gift sets the entire plot of the series in motion, as the deck contains the living LRIG Tama, which inadvertently makes Ruuko a Selector and draws her into the dangerous battles that follow.
In terms of personality, Ayumu is depicted as a caring individual who enjoys playing video games, including custom games made by his grandmother. He is known to tease and provoke Ruuko in a typical sibling fashion, but this masks a genuine concern for her well-being. This protective instinct is most visibly demonstrated during an incident where Ruuko returns home very late after a traumatic encounter with another Selector. Driven by fear and worry for her safety, Ayumu slaps her, an act of anger born of his concern rather than malice. His behavior indicates a cool and generally nice demeanor, and he is notable for being one of the few male characters in the series who is involved with WIXOSS, though he himself is not a Selector, as that role is exclusive to girls.
Ayumu’s background reveals a more complex family history. Following his mother’s divorce, he initially treated Ruuko as a nuisance, though he grows out of this attitude by the time he becomes an adult. He is also the one who informed Ruuko that their last name would be changing from Tachibana to Kominato as a result of the divorce. This past adds a layer to his present relationship with Ruuko, suggesting an evolution from a troubled childhood dynamic to a more responsible and caring brother in his later teens.
His key relationships are centered on his family. With his grandmother Hatsu, he shares a loving bond and enjoys the video games she creates. With Ruuko, his role is that of a catalyst and a guardian. He is the person who introduces her to the world of WIXOSS, and he continues to look out for her, worrying about her social life and safety. His development within the story is not as a combatant or a Selector, but as a static supporting figure whose single, well-intentioned action has profound and unintended consequences for his sister. He does not possess any special abilities related to the card game, as he does not participate in Selector battles; his notable role is solely that of the giver of the deck and a concerned older brother.
