Description
Seventeen-year-old transfer student Ryūko Matoi arrives at Honnōji Academy hunting her father Isshin Matoi's killer, guided solely by one half of a red Scissor Blade from the crime scene. Believed human at first, Ryūko later uncovers her hybrid nature – part human, part parasitic alien Life Fibers – the result of an experiment by her biological mother, Ragyō Kiryūin, who deemed it a failure at birth. Her biological father, Sōichirō Kiryūin, faked his death to become Isshin Matoi, raising Ryūko in secrecy while developing Life Fiber countermeasures.

Shaped by childhood neglect as her father prioritized research, Ryūko developed a fierce, stubborn, and hot-blooded personality, becoming a juvenile delinquent who skipped school and brawled. Discovering her father's corpse fuels her vengeful quest, intensifying her aggression. Her entry into Honnōji is marked by direct challenges to authority, especially student council president Satsuki Kiryūin, whom she suspects knows her father's murderer.

Her journey converges with Senketsu, a sentient Kamui (living uniform of Life Fibers) crafted by her father. Activated by Ryūko's blood, Senketsu grants transformative powers via "Life Fiber Synchronize," boosting her strength, speed, and regeneration. Overcoming initial embarrassment at Senketsu's revealing forms, Ryūko forges a bond, naming the Kamui and relying on its combat power. Senketsu adapts with forms like Senjin (blade), Shippu (flight), and Mubyōshi (sound-dampening) to counter specific threats.

Ryūko wields the Scissor Blade, designed to sever Life Fibers, in configurations such as Decapitation Mode (extended two-handed) and Alumni Mode (massively scaled). Her inherent hybrid physiology grants superhuman traits, enabling victories against foes like Honnōji's Elite Four and survival of severe injuries, including cardiac extraction and bisection. Extreme rage, however, disrupts synchronization, triggering a vulnerable berserk state.

Key revelations reshape Ryūko: Ragyō's aide, Nui Harime, is exposed as her father's killer; later, she learns Satsuki is her older sister and Ragyō her mother. The Kiryūin history involves Ragyō's plan to harvest humanity via Life Fibers, opposed secretly by Satsuki. This causes Ryūko severe emotional turmoil, leading to temporary rejection of Senketsu. Ragyō brainwashes her, forcing her into the Kamui Junketsu, which twists her personality to wild and sadistic. Mako Mankanshoku (her closest friend), Satsuki, and Senketsu free her.

In the final conflict, Ryūko reconciles with Satsuki, allying against Ragyō and the Primordial Life Fiber. To prevent Earth's assimilation, Ryūko ascends to space in Senketsu Kisaragi—a powered-up form fueled by Life Fibers absorbed from all Goku Uniforms. She destroys the Life Fiber threat, but Senketsu sacrifices himself for her safe return. An OVA epilogue shows Ryūko sinking Honnōji Academy with the Scissor Blades for closure. She moves forward without Senketsu, acknowledging her growth and embracing peace with Mako and allies.

Ryūko evolves from a solitary avenger to a protector motivated by friendship and family bonds. Her resilience overcomes mind control through self-inflicted pain and rejects Ragyō's ideology despite their biological link. Initially struggling to accept Satsuki as her sister, she eventually acknowledges their relationship, calling her "sis" after their reunion post-battle.
