Description
Jun Godai is a minor character who appears only once in the Sailor Moon Sailor Stars anime, specifically in the episode where he serves as the human identity of the phage known as Sailor Sommelier. In his daily life, Jun Godai is a well-known television moderator and interviewer. His professional role involves hosting a program where he visits private homes in the evening, knocking on doors to see and report on what ordinary people are having for dinner.
His personality as a human appears to be that of a persistent and curious entertainment reporter, dedicated to his segment. This is demonstrated when he arrives at the Tsukino residence with his film crew, intending to interview the family about their evening meal. On this particular occasion, the household secretly hosts several prominent individuals, including Haruka Tenoh, Michiru Kaioh, and the popular idol group the Three Lights, who are hiding to avoid being seen eating at a private home. The Sailor Guardian Minako Aino is reluctantly tasked with trying to stall Jun Godai and his crew as they begin to look around the house.
Jun Godai's role in the story is ultimately that of an unwitting victim of the antagonists Sailor Lead Crow and Sailor Aluminum Seiren. The Shadow Galactica soldiers target him to extract his Star Seed. When Sailor Aluminum Seiren uses her bracelets to remove his Star Seed, it is revealed to be a blank, meaning it possesses no true light. As a direct result of this failed extraction, Jun Godai undergoes a forced transformation into a phage, a monster corrupted by the power of Shadow Galactica. His new form, Sailor Sommelier, is a direct reflection of his human occupation as a food reporter.
As Sailor Sommelier, his appearance is notable for being unique among phages; he does not wear a sailor uniform. Instead, he resembles a humanoid wine bottle dressed in a waiter's costume. His abilities are similarly themed around his namesake profession. The primary weapon is a wine bottle attached to the end of his right arm, from which he can spray jets of red wine at his opponents. This ability proves to be unexpectedly formidable, as the bottle on his arm is also capable of absorbing Sailor Neptune's "Deep Submerge" attack, rendering it completely harmless.
Regarding his development, Jun Godai exists only as a single-episode character with no prior or subsequent appearances. His transformation into a phage is swiftly resolved by the Sailor Guardians. After a brief battle, Sailor Moon uses the power of light to purify him, reversing the corruption and restoring him to his original human form. This restoration has a unique characteristic that sets him apart from nearly every other phage in the series. While most phages exclaim the word "beautiful" upon being purified, Jun Godai instead shouts "gochisousama deshita," a Japanese phrase said after finishing a meal to express gratitude for the food. This final line reinforces his identity as a culinary reporter, bringing his brief story to a thematically consistent close.
Key relationships for Jun Godai are minimal due to his singular appearance. He has no established family or close associates in his human life. Instead, his primary interactions are with his own unnamed film crew and the Tsukino family, whom he is attempting to interview. On a narrative level, his fate is directly tied to the antagonists Sailor Aluminum Seiren and Sailor Lead Crow, who are responsible for his attack and transformation. He has no conscious connection to the Sailor Guardians, who ultimately fight to save him.
