Description
Ail, also known by his human disguise name Seijuro Ginga, is one of the two primary antagonists from the Doom Tree arc of the second season of the 1990s Sailor Moon anime. He is an extraterrestrial being who arrives on Earth alongside his companion, Ann, as one of the last surviving members of their alien race. The two are dependent on a sentient, mobile tree known as the Doom Tree or Makaiju, which provides them with the energy they need to live. In exchange, they are tasked with gathering life energy from humans to sustain the tree, which has been weakened from traveling through space. To blend in and carry out their mission, Ail and Ann assume human identities, posing as siblings. Ail enrolls as a ninth-grade student at Juuban Municipal Junior High School under the name Seijuro Ginga, where he quickly becomes a popular and admired figure among the female students.
In his natural alien form, Ail has light green skin, pointed elf-like ears, and dark blue eyes. His hair is a lighter shade of blue with distinctive pink streaks in the longer parts of his fringe, and he wears a form-fitting dark blue bodysuit. When disguised as the human Seijuro Ginga, his appearance changes to that of a handsome teenager with fair skin, neck-length orange hair, and striking purplish-blue eyes. He retains a single earring on his right ear in both forms. Seijuro is portrayed as charismatic and athletic, which, combined with his mysterious aura, makes him the subject of many crushes at school.
Personality-wise, Ail is more outgoing and socially adaptable than his partner Ann, though he initially has a very poor understanding of human customs and emotions. He can be flirtatious and shows a tendency to be a womanizer, often finding himself attracted to human girls, which greatly irritates Ann. He has a competitive streak, particularly with Mamoru Chiba, whom he views as a rival. His perception of love is initially distorted and selfish; he believes it is something that can be taken by force or won through competition rather than a mutual, giving emotion. Despite this, he is more curious and inquisitive about human culture than Ann, and over time, he shows a capacity for genuine feeling and self-reflection. He is skilled at playing a flute, an instrument he uses to summon and control the Cardians, the monster-like creatures that actually drain energy from human targets.
Ail's primary motivation throughout the story arc is survival. He and Ann believe their continued existence depends entirely on feeding the Doom Tree, and they view humans merely as a necessary resource. This utilitarian mindset is challenged as he spends more time living among the people of Earth. He develops a genuine romantic crush on Usagi Tsukino, the civilian identity of Sailor Moon. This one-sided affection puts him in frequent, awkward conflict with his mission and with Ann, who is herself infatuated with Mamoru. His relationship with Ann is complex; they are comrades bound by necessity and a shared origin, but their partnership is strained by jealousy and their differing reactions to human society. While they often bicker and sabotage each other's romantic pursuits, their deep bond is revealed when they are ultimately willing to sacrifice themselves for one another.
The most significant aspect of Ail's character is his development. He is the first of the two aliens to recognize the beauty and power of positive human emotions, particularly love. He witnesses the love between Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask and comes to understand that it is a powerful, positive energy, completely unlike the selfish greed that destroyed his home world. This revelation marks a turning point, leading him to reject his previous methods. In the final confrontation, when the Doom Tree turns against him, Ann sacrifices herself to save him. In a moment of true despair and love, it is revealed that the Doom Tree does not feed on ordinary life energy at all, but on the energy of love. With this understanding, Ail and Ann are given a second chance. The tree is purified and reborn as a sprout, and the two aliens leave Earth together, intending to find a new world where they can nurture their tree with their newly understood, genuine love for each other.
Notable abilities of Ail include his capacity to transform between his human and alien appearances. He wields a mystical flute; by playing it, he can awaken Cardians from tarot-like cards and command them to attack. He is also able to teleport and seemingly has a degree of enhanced durability and strength, though he rarely engages in direct physical combat, preferring to let the Cardians do the work. He also demonstrates the ability to directly drain small amounts of energy from individuals. As one of the few major antagonists in the Sailor Moon franchise to survive and be redeemed, Ail represents the theme that even those who have done wrong are capable of change when they open their hearts to love and understanding.
