Description
In the anime Sailor Moon R, the character known as An is the true identity of a human girl named Natsumi Ginga. An is one of two primary antagonists in the opening story arc of the season, which centers on the alien Makaiju, or Doom Tree. She and her companion, Ail, are the last surviving members of an alien race that was born from and sustained by the Makaiju. When their home planet perished due to the greed of their people, they traveled to Earth with the dying tree to harvest human life energy for its survival.
To blend in and collect this energy, An assumes the human disguise of Natsumi Ginga, a student who transfers into Usagi Tsukino's class at Juuban Municipal Middle School. In this form, she has pale skin, red hair that falls just past her shoulders, and brown eyes. Her true alien appearance is markedly different, featuring light green skin, long pink hair with blue highlights, and hot pink eyes. She presents herself as Ail's younger sister while on Earth, though their bond is far deeper and more complex.
Personality-wise, Natsumi Ginga is portrayed as selfish, vain, and arrogant, particularly in her interactions with the other girls at school. She is openly disdainful of human customs and food, showing little empathy for those she and Ail harm in their quest for energy. However, this cold exterior is contrasted by a fierce and often comedic obsession with Mamoru Chiba, also known as Tuxedo Mask. She becomes infatuated with him almost immediately upon arriving on Earth, viewing him as a physically perfect specimen and relentlessly pursuing his affection. Her motivations are driven by a dual purpose: her primary goal is to secure enough energy to save the Makaiju, which is directly tied to her own survival. Her secondary, and increasingly distracting, goal is to win Mamoru's love, leading her to scheme and compete directly with Usagi for his attention. This creates a significant internal conflict, as she begins to neglect her mission in favor of her crush.
Her role in the story is that of a secondary antagonist who directly antagonizes the Sailor Guardians. While Ail is responsible for summoning the Cardian monsters, An is typically the one who selects which Cardian to deploy to drain energy from humans. Her actions frequently drive the plot of individual episodes, such as when she cheats to secure the lead role in a school play simply for the chance to kiss Mamoru. Her key relationships define her arc. Her relationship with Ail is the most significant; though they bicker and become jealous of each other's human crushes, they are fundamentally dependent on one another. Her rivalry with Usagi is another central dynamic, as both girls compete for Mamoru's affection, mirroring the growing tension between Ail and Mamoru. Her pursuit of Mamoru is ultimately one-sided and unrequited, as he remains oblivious to her advances and is drawn to Usagi.
Throughout the arc, An undergoes notable development. She begins as a seemingly cruel and single-minded villain who believes love is something to be taken by force. However, her experiences on Earth force her to confront genuine human emotions. Her jealousy and possessiveness eventually give way to a sacrificial act. When the Makaiju goes out of control and attempts to kill Ail, An throws herself in front of the attack, sacrificing her life to save him. In this moment of selflessness, she learns the true meaning of love. Revived by the reborn Tree of Life, which feeds on love rather than stolen energy, she and Ail finally understand their feelings for each other. They depart from Earth together with the rejuvenated tree to start a new life elsewhere, fully reformed.
Regarding notable abilities, as an alien, An requires life energy to survive and frequently loses it, needing to return to the Makaiju or drain it from humans. She is responsible for selecting which Cardian monster to send against the Sailor Guardians, using cards to summon them. While her direct combat abilities are less defined than Ail's, she is shown to be capable of fighting in her true form and is resilient enough to survive without immediate sustenance for a time. Her most significant ability, however, may be her capacity for change, as she ultimately rejects her parasitic methods in favor of genuine love and coexistence.
