Description
Karmesite, also known as Koan, is a character from the anime Sailor Moon R. She is the youngest of the four Ayakashi Sisters, also known as the Spectre Sisters, who serve the Black Moon Clan. Her name is derived from the mineral kermesite. In her villainous form, she has a distinctive appearance characterized by long, wavy dark purple hair styled into two prominent points, dark purple eyes, and the Black Moon symbol on her forehead. Her battle attire consists of a striped pink bodysuit, a voluminous purple tutu, and blue heels. After being reformed, she loses the Black Moon mark and adopts casual clothing, such as a black sleeveless turtleneck and a long light purple skirt.

Koan is defined by her vanity and ambition. She is deeply obsessed with her own beauty and physical appearance, constantly applying makeup and worrying about her looks. She is an expert in cosmetics and skin care, a profession she uses as a cover during her missions and later pursues as a legitimate business. Her personality is marked by a superficial and somewhat intolerant demeanor, but this is a front for a more vulnerable individual driven by a need for love and recognition. Her greatest driving force is her unrequited love for her commander, Rubeus. She dreams of one day becoming the Queen of Crystal Tokyo with him as her king, and she is desperate to prove her worth to him by succeeding in her missions.

In the story, Koan is the first of the Spectre Sisters to be sent to 20th-century Tokyo. Her primary mission is to locate and capture the young girl Chibiusa, also known as Rini, and retrieve the Silver Crystal. She initially poses as a cosmetics saleswoman to infiltrate the Hikawa Shrine, where Chibiusa is hiding. Her role is that of a persistent and determined antagonist who clashes directly with the Sailor Guardians, particularly Sailor Mars. Her key relationships are with her commander Rubeus, whom she adores, and with her three sisters, Berthier, Calaveras, and Petz, though she does not display the same level of deference towards them as Berthier does. Her most significant adversarial relationship is with Sailor Mars, as both characters wield fire-based powers, making them natural rivals.

Koan undergoes a significant character development arc, which culminates in her redemption. Her turning point occurs when Rubeus cruelly rejects her after she fails to defeat Sailor Mars. Having lost the love and purpose she lived for, she becomes hysterical and is given a black hole bomb by Rubeus with the understanding that she is to die in the explosion, destroying her enemies along with herself. In her despair, Sailor Mars reaches out to her, offering friendship and a chance to start a new life. Mars risks her own safety to protect Koan and argues that Rubeus never truly loved her, encouraging her to trust in the genuine kindness of others. Moved by this compassion, Koan accepts the offer. Sailor Moon then uses the power of the Silver Crystal to purify her, transforming her from a humanoid resident of the planet Nemesis into a noble human being. After her reformation, Koan sheds her obsession with Rubeus and dedicates herself to her passion for cosmetics, opening her own shop. She becomes a kind and supportive friend to the Sailor Guardians, showing particular affection and protectiveness towards a now-friendly Chibiusa. She later plays a key role in convincing her sister Berthier to also leave the Black Moon Clan.

As a member of the Black Moon Clan, Koan possesses several notable abilities. Her primary offensive power is Dark Fire, a form of destructive black flame she can project at her enemies. In combat, she acts as a counterpart to Sailor Mars, who uses purifying fire. She also uses a powder compact as a communication device to stay in contact with Rubeus and receive his orders. As a human after her purification, she no longer exhibits these powers.
