Description
Alé, more commonly known by his human alias Seijuro Ginga, is one of the two primary antagonists featured in the Makai Tree arc of the second season of the 1990s anime. He and his companion An are the last surviving members of an alien race whose existence depended on the Makai Tree, a sentient cosmic entity that gave them life. After their home planet was destroyed when their people became greedy and fought over the tree's energy, the tree relocated to Earth with Ail and An as its only remaining charges. To survive, they were forced to drain energy from humans, disguising themselves as siblings to attend Juban Public Middle School, where Ail takes on the identity of a ninth-grade student named Seijuro Ginga.

In terms of personality, Ail is characterized by a flirtatious and somewhat womanizing demeanor, which contrasts with the more openly hostile nature of his partner, An. He frequently finds himself attracted to various human girls, a tendency that greatly bothers An, who is deeply jealous of his wandering eye. He seems to unconsciously draw the attention of women, possibly aided by the music from his flute, though he does not typically seem bothered by their affection. While he shares An's confusion about human customs and emotions, Ail is often more inquisitive and willing to learn about their culture. This is demonstrated when he struggles to understand the concept of gift-giving, which goes against his people's philosophy, yet he makes an effort to give a present to An anyway. He also displays a noticeable competitive streak, particularly against Mamoru Chiba, which mirrors the petty quarrels between Usagi Tsukino and An.

Ail's motivations evolve significantly over the course of the story. Initially, his primary goal is purely survival: to drain human life energy to feed the Makai Tree, as the tree's death would mean his own. He prefers to target men for energy draining, as he does not value them as much as the cute girls he finds himself drawn to. However, his actions are complicated by his developing feelings for Usagi, which he keeps secret from An. His initial perception of love is distorted and selfish; he believes that love is something to be taken forcefully. This flawed understanding drives much of his early conflict, as he attempts to woo Usagi while simultaneously battling her as a Sailor Guardian.

Key relationships are central to Ail's character arc. His most significant relationship is with An, his partner who is both his sibling in disguise and his romantic interest. Their dynamic is turbulent and co-dependent, strained by Ail's flirtatious nature and An's insecurity. His growing infatuation with Usagi Tsukino places him in a unique position as an antagonist who is personally attracted to the heroine. This leads him to crash a school play out of jealousy when he is not cast as the prince opposite Usagi's Snow White. His rivalry with Mamoru is another crucial relationship, fueled by his jealousy over Mamoru's connection to Usagi.

Ail undergoes a significant development by the conclusion of the arc. He is the first of the two aliens to recognize the power and beauty of positive human emotions, specifically love. After a confrontation with the Sailor Guardians, the Makai Tree itself attacks Ail, and An sacrifices herself to save him, dying from her injuries. The tree then reveals that it does not feed on the forced energy they were stealing, but rather on the energy of love. Realizing the error of his ways, Ail finally accepts the idea of love as an equal exchange rather than a forceful taking, and he re-ignites his genuine relationship with An. After Sailor Moon heals the Makai Tree, An is brought back to life, and Ail leaves Earth with her and the tree to start a new, peaceful life based on their newfound understanding of true love.

Notable abilities of Ail include the use of a magical flute, which he plays to awaken and summon their energy-gathering monsters, known as Cardians, and to channel the power of the Makai Tree. In his human disguise as Seijuro Ginga, he is portrayed as a popular and attractive student whose charisma and musical talent easily draw the attention of others.
