Description
Prince Diamant, known in the original Japanese version as Prince Demande and in some English adaptations as Prince Diamond, is the leader of the Black Moon Clan and a central antagonist in the second half of Sailor Moon R. He is the ruler of Planet Nemesis in the 30th century, a dark world where the descendants of people who opposed Crystal Tokyo were exiled. His people carry the mark of a black inverted crescent on their foreheads, the opposite of the symbol of the Moon Kingdom, and they draw their power from the Malefic Black Crystal, a dark counterpart to the Legendary Silver Crystal.
In terms of background, Diamant was born into this outcast society and initially did not intend to wage war. His original wish was to reason with Neo-Queen Serenity, the queen of Crystal Tokyo, and explain that his people were descendants of criminals rather than criminals themselves. However, he was gradually manipulated by his adviser, Wiseman, who fed his resentment toward the people of Earth and Crystal Tokyo. Diamant came to resent the near-immortal citizens of Crystal Tokyo, believing their extended lifespans were unnatural, and he became convinced that his clan had been treated unjustly. Under Wiseman's influence, he launched a devastating attack on Crystal Tokyo with the power of the Evil Black Crystal.
His personality is marked by arrogance, pride, and impulsiveness. He carries himself like a royal figure, calm and commanding before his subordinates, but his emotions easily override his judgment. He relies heavily on Wiseman's counsel, which places the real authority of the clan in Wiseman's hands. His most defining trait is his obsessive love. During the attack on Crystal Tokyo, he caught a glimpse of Neo-Queen Serenity and became fixated on her, fascinated especially by the anger in her eyes. This obsession extended to her past self, Sailor Moon, and drove much of his later behavior. His love is possessive and controlling rather than genuine, and it fuels his desire to capture and brainwash Sailor Moon into becoming his queen.
His primary motivation is twofold. First, he wants to destroy Crystal Tokyo and its ruling family out of bitterness and a sense of grievance. Second, he wants to claim Neo-Queen Serenity, or her past incarnation, for himself. To achieve this, he pursues Chibiusa, the daughter of Neo-Queen Serenity, into the 20th century as part of an operation to rewrite history by eliminating the past forms of the Sailor Guardians and their allies. During this campaign, he abducts Sailor Moon and attempts to use the power of his third eye to brainwash her into loving him and submitting to his will.
In the story, Diamant serves as the leader of the Black Moon Clan's invasion, overseeing the operations carried out by his subordinates while remaining in his stronghold on Nemesis. He is the secondary antagonist of the season, standing above officers such as Rubeus and Esmeraude and working alongside his younger brother, Saphir. His key relationships define his arc. With Wiseman, he is a trusting follower, unaware for most of the story that he is being used as a pawn. With his brother Saphir, he is genuinely affectionate, although he dismisses Saphir's warnings about Wiseman. Saphir eventually discovers that Wiseman has been manipulating the clan and tries to warn his brother, which leads Wiseman to kill Saphir. The death of his brother is the turning point for Diamant. In his final moments, he asks Sailor Moon for forgiveness, requests that she watch over the remaining inhabitants of Nemesis, and dies in her arms. His death is a redemption of sorts, as he chooses to protect the person he had previously tried to control.
