Description
Natsumi Ginga is the human identity adopted by Ann, an alien from a destroyed planet who appears as one of the two primary antagonists in the Makai Tree arc of Sailor Moon R, the second season of the 1990s anime. Ann and her companion Ail were the only survivors of their homeworld, raised and sustained by a sentient alien tree known as the Makaiju, or Doom Tree. When the tree’s energy began to deplete, the pair traveled to Earth to drain human energy in order to keep both themselves and the tree alive. To blend in, Ann assumed the civilian persona of Natsumi Ginga, a teenage girl who lived with Ail, posing as her brother, in an apartment in the Juuban district.

Ann’s personality is marked by impulsiveness, jealousy, and a self-centered streak. She quickly develops a strong infatuation with Mamoru Chiba, the young man who is the boyfriend of the series’ protagonist, Usagi Tsukino. This crush drives much of her early behavior, as she constantly tries to win Mamoru’s attention and affection, often provoking rivalry with Usagi and frustration from Ail, who harbors feelings for Usagi. Despite her vanity and emotional reactivity, Ann is not genuinely evil; her motivations stem from a desperate need to survive and protect the tree that raised her. She is capable of showing care for Ail and the Makaiju, though her actions are frequently guided by selfish impulses.

In the story, Ann serves as a foil to the Sailor Guardians, particularly Usagi, and her efforts to steal energy create conflict that forces the heroes to relearn their powers and rediscover their bonds. She and Ail summon monsters called Cardians from a deck of cards, which Ail activates with a flute; Ann chooses which card to use. In her true alien form, she has dark pink eyes and a more otherworldly appearance. Her key relationship is with Ail, her long-time companion and fellow survivor. Though they sometimes bicker and grow jealous of each other’s crushes, they ultimately share a deep loyalty rooted in their shared history and dependence on the Makaiju. Ann also interacts with Usagi as a romantic rival and with Mamoru as the object of her unreturned affection.

Throughout the Makai Tree arc, Ann undergoes a degree of development. Initially focused solely on draining energy and pursuing Mamoru, she gradually comes to understand that the tree’s true need is love rather than mere life force. In the arc’s climax, after Sailor Moon purifies the tree, Ann and Ail are given a second chance as the tree is reborn from a small sprout. This resolution implies that they have learned to value compassion and connection over survival at any cost.

Notable abilities include her ability to change between her human disguise and alien form, her knack for choosing powerful Cardian monsters, and her capacity to absorb or siphon energy from humans. She does not engage in direct physical combat herself but relies on Ail and the summoned creatures. As an anime-only character, Ann does not appear in the original manga, and her story is confined to the first thirteen episodes of Sailor Moon R.
