Description
Prince Dimondo, also written as Prince Demande, Prince Dimande, or Prince Diamond in different localizations, is the leader of the Black Moon Clan in the anime Sailor Moon R. He is an adult prince with pale silver-white hair, violet eyes, and a regal, commanding bearing. He serves as the principal antagonist of the season's second story arc.
Dimondo comes from a grim future in which his people live on the planet Nemesis, a world inhabited by descendants of criminals exiled from Earth. His original intention was not conquest but dialogue: he wanted to reason with Neo-Queen Serenity and convince her that his people were not criminals themselves, merely the descendants of criminals. Over time, however, the mysterious figure Wiseman manipulated him, feeding his resentment toward Earth and Crystal Tokyo, the shining city of the future governed by Neo-Queen Serenity. Dimondo came to regard the long-lived citizens of Crystal Tokyo as corrupt and unworthy of their peaceful, prosperous existence, and he resolved to overthrow them.
Personality-wise, Dimondo is ambitious, proud, intense, and easily consumed by his emotions. He is also dangerously trusting of Wiseman, ignoring the warnings of his younger brother Sapphire, who suspects that Wiseman is using them. His most defining trait is obsession. During an attack on Crystal Tokyo, he catches a glimpse of Neo-Queen Serenity and is immediately enchanted, particularly by her eyes and the anger he saw in them. This fascination grows into an all-consuming desire to possess her. When he cannot reach the queen of the future, he transfers that obsession to her past self, the young Sailor Moon, and becomes determined to claim her as his own.
His motivations therefore blend political grievance with romantic fixation. He wants to destroy Crystal Tokyo and the Sailor Guardians who defend it, obtain the power of the Silver Crystal, and make Sailor Moon his queen. In pursuit of these goals, he directs the Black Moon Clan's campaign against Chibiusa and the Sailor Guardians, using subordinates such as Esmeraude, Rubeus, and Sapphire to carry out his plans. As the conflict escalates, he personally abducts Sailor Moon and brings her to his castle, where he attempts to brainwash her using the power of his third eye so that she will willingly become his bride. She is ultimately rescued with the help of Tuxedo Mask.
Dimondo's story arc includes a significant shift near its end. After Sapphire is killed and he realizes how completely Wiseman has exploited him, his worldview begins to crack. Sailor Moon's compassion and her insistence that Earth is not his enemy finally reach him. In the final confrontation, when Wiseman turns his destructive power against Sailor Moon, Dimondo shields her with his own body and dies from the attack, sacrificing himself to protect the person he had once tried to force into loving him.
