Description
In the English dub of the Sailor Moon R anime, Alan is one of the two main antagonists featured in the first thirteen episodes, known as the Doom Tree arc. He is an alien from a distant planet who, along with his companion Ann, arrives on Earth as one of the last survivors of their race. Their survival is tied directly to a sentient entity known as the Doom Tree, which originally gave them life and sustained them. However, the tree is dying, and to save themselves and their life-giving tree, Alan and Ann must find a new source of energy on Earth.
Physically, Alan has long blue hair, often with distinctive pink stripes on his bangs, and his typical attire is a form-fitting blue outfit reminiscent of his home planet. To blend in with humans and access a consistent flow of energy, he adopts the human alias Alan Granger and poses as a student at the local high school, where he pretends to be Ann's older brother.
In terms of personality, Alan is generally calm and collected, though he can be somewhat naive or foolish, particularly when it comes to matters of the heart. Unlike traditional villains, he is portrayed as more misguided than truly evil. Initially, his motivations are purely survival-driven, as he and Ann must drain life energy from humans to feed the Doom Tree. He is often the one who decides which Cardian, a type of monster summoned from a deck of cards, to send on a mission to collect energy, a process initiated by playing a haunting melody on his flute.
Alan's primary role in the story is as a direct threat to the Sailor Guardians, forcing them to regain their lost memories and powers to protect Tokyo. However, his role becomes more complex as he develops genuine feelings for Serena, the civilian identity of Sailor Moon. This infatuation creates a rift between him and Ann, who becomes jealous and begins to pursue Darien, Serena's love interest. Throughout the arc, Alan struggles to understand human emotions like love and sacrifice, which are foreign concepts to him. He initially interprets his attraction to Serena as love, not recognizing that his true bond is with Ann.
A key aspect of his development is his gradual realization of what love truly means. By witnessing the connection between Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, he begins to understand that what he and Ann are doing is wrong. This culminates in a final battle at the Doom Tree, where Alan tries to protect Serena. When the Doom Tree attacks him in a rage, Ann sacrifices her life to save him. Her death is a pivotal moment that teaches Alan the ultimate lesson about love and selflessness. Sailor Moon then heals the Doom Tree, revealing that it thrives not on stolen energy but on the energy of pure love. Ann is revived, and Alan, having learned his lesson, departs from Earth with Ann and the now-benevolent Tree of Life to start a new, peaceful existence elsewhere.
Alan possesses several notable abilities. He can levitate or fly and has the power to hypnotize others by making eye contact with them. His signature ability involves playing his flute to summon monsters called Cardians from a set of cards, which then carry out his orders to drain energy. For direct combat, he can generate and project electrical or gravitational energy blasts to attack his enemies or knock them down.
