Description
Ann, who also goes by the human alias Natsumi Ginga, is a central antagonist in the first story arc of the second anime season. Her human disguise presents her as a young, brown-haired middle school student who transfers into the same class as the protagonist. In her true form, she has pink hair, pale green skin, and pointed ears, wearing a dark red outfit that matches her companion, Alan. The name Natsumi Ginga translates to themes of galaxy or Milky Way, reflecting her extraterrestrial origin.
Ann and Alan are the last surviving members of their alien species, having been born from and sustained by a sentient, energy-dependent entity known as the Doom Tree or Tree of Darkness. After their home planet perished, they traveled to Earth with the dying tree, seeking human energy to keep it alive and, by extension, themselves. To blend in, they pose as siblings, and while Alan plays a charming and friendly role, Ann adopts the personality of a snobbish and anti-social girl.
Her personality is defined by selfishness, arrogance, and a cruel indifference to the humans she sees as mere energy sources. She is deeply spoiled and prone to jealousy, particularly when Alan shows interest in other girls. However, her most defining trait during her time on Earth is her sudden, infatuated obsession with Mamoru Chiba. She finds him extremely handsome and becomes single-minded in her pursuit of his affection, creating an immediate rivalry with Usagi, who also has feelings for him. Ann frequently devises schemes to gain Mamoru's attention, such as cheating to win the lead role of Snow White in a school play specifically to kiss him during the performance. Her feelings for Mamoru are purely physical and possessive, and they ultimately distract her from her mission and her original bond with Alan.
In the story, Ann acts as the primary agent for collecting energy. While Alan uses his flute to summon a monster known as a Cardian, Ann is the one who selects which Cardian to deploy and sends it to attack innocent people. Her role as an antagonist places her directly against the Sailor Guardians, who work to stop the energy thefts. Her key relationships are central to her development. Her partnership with Alan is initially one of survival and shared purpose, but it becomes strained as she falls for Mamoru, and he falls for Usagi. Her rivalry with Usagi is both combative and competitive, as they argue frequently over Mamoru and even make bets to determine who will win his heart.
Over the course of the arc, Ann experiences a significant, if tragic, development. Her obsession with Mamoru and her mission to save the tree are challenged when the Doom Tree begins to act on its own. In the final confrontation, the tree tries to kill Alan, who had begun to question their actions. In a moment of self-sacrifice, Ann jumps in front of him to take the fatal blow, understanding for the first time the true meaning of love and selflessness. Her death is immediate, but after Sailor Moon purifies the tree, it uses its remaining energy to revive her. Having learned their lesson, Ann and Alan leave Earth with the now-benevolent tree to start a new life elsewhere.
As an alien from the Doom Tree, Ann possesses several notable abilities. She can fire powerful energy blasts from her hands, which she uses in her true form to attack the Sailor Guardians. She also demonstrates the ability to drain life energy directly from a person. Her primary tactical ability is the selection and deployment of Cardians, which are the monster-of-the-week creatures that do the actual work of gathering energy for the tree.
