Description
Kalaberai, known in some adaptations as Calaveras or Avery, is a character from the second arc of the Sailor Moon anime series, Sailor Moon R. She is the second eldest of the four Ayakashi Sisters, also known as the Spectre Sisters, who serve as the primary antagonists under the command of Rubeus, a high-ranking officer of the Black Moon Clan. Her name is derived from the mineral calaverite, which suits the thematic naming of her sisters, all of whom are named after minerals.
In the original Japanese anime, Kalaberai is depicted with a distinctive appearance that includes long brown hair often styled up and secured with a large golden ribbon, and brown eyes. She wears a uniform typical of the Black Moon Clan, consisting of a gold sleeveless top, a red collar, gold bracelets, a red skirt, and golden boots, along with earrings made of Black Crystal. While her design shares many elements with her sisters, her specific hairstyle and accessories make her easily distinguishable.
Personality is a key area where Kalaberai stands out, particularly in the anime adaptation. She is characterized as being petty, somewhat lazy, and possessing a sharp, teasing tongue. Unlike her more dedicated sisters, she seems reluctant to take on solo missions and often accompanies her elder sister, Petz, on her assignments. She takes particular delight in relentlessly teasing Petz, often mocking her serious demeanor and disdain for men. Despite this, there is an underlying bond between the sisters, as their dynamic is one of constant, if bickering, proximity. Kalaberai also displays a degree of vanity and confidence in her own charms, believing herself to be highly attractive to men and looking down on anything she considers beneath her or easily attained.
Her motivations shift over the course of the R series. Initially, she is driven by a sense of duty to the Black Moon Clan and a desire to succeed in her missions, though she often tries to achieve this by piggybacking on her sister's work and attempting to steal credit. However, her primary motivation for attending missions is less about serving the clan and more about her own amusement or proving her superiority over her siblings. This changes dramatically when she and Petz are given a powerful dark stick by Rubeus to eliminate the Sailor Guardians and their purified sisters, Berthier and Koan. The stick's corruption changes Petz into a mindless berserker who turns on Kalaberai. Faced with her own sister's betrayal, Kalaberai experiences shock and fear, leading her to question the cause she is fighting for.
The character's role in the story exists in two starkly different versions, one for the anime and one for the original manga. In the 1990s anime continuity, Kalaberai is a recurring antagonist who serves as a foil to Sailor Venus. Both share a similar weapon of choice, a whip. Kalaberai's whip, which she can extend and control as if it were a part of her body, serves as a dark parallel to Venus's Love Me Chain. She is present during the sisters' final confrontation with the Sailor Guardians. It is during this battle, after seeing the corruption of the stick and the manipulation by Rubeus, that she has her key moment of development. She realizes that the Black Moon Clan has been using them as disposable tools, leading her to an understanding of human love and compassion. She ultimately betrays Rubeus to help the Sailor Guardians, and alongside Petz, is purified by Sailor Moon's Moon Crystal Power, transforming into an ordinary human girl. In this version, her ability to commune with spirits is not a prominent feature.
In the original manga and the Sailor Moon Crystal anime, Kalaberai is portrayed very differently. Here, she is more directly a counterpart to Sailor Venus and possesses the power of a medium or spirit channeler. She is the last of the four sisters to be sent on a mission, tasked with executing Operation Rebirth. For this mission, she poses as a prophet named Miss Calaveras and uses her spiritual powers through a television broadcast to hypnotize the populace, aiming to brainwash them into allegiance with the Black Moon Clan. When confronted by Sailor Venus, she demonstrates her signature ability by channeling the spirits of her three deceased sisters to launch a powerful spiritual attack. In this continuity, Kalaberai is a more formidable and directly lethal opponent, and she is ultimately destroyed by Sailor Moon rather than being purified.
Regarding notable abilities, her power set varies between adaptations. In the manga, her primary ability is powerful mediumship, allowing her to contact and summon the dead. In the anime, her primary weapon is the Dark Love Whip, a powerful and versatile weapon she uses for offense and defense. She also demonstrates a degree of durability and basic combat training common among the Black Moon Clan. Regardless of the version, she is consistently designated as the counterpart to Sailor Venus, a fact that informs her rivalrous relationship with that specific Guardian.
