Description
Berterai, also known as Beruche or Bertie in some adaptations, is a character from the second season of the Sailor Moon anime, Sailor Moon R. She is the second youngest of the four Ayakashi Sisters, also known as the Spectre Sisters, who serve as agents of the Black Moon Clan under their commander, Rubeus. Her name is derived from the mineral berthierite.
In terms of appearance, Berterai is a young woman with pale blue or white hair, which she typically wears in a long braid. She has blue eyes and a distinctive Black Moon symbol on her forehead. Her attire consists of a blue leotard or bathing suit-style outfit, complemented by blue gloves and blue boots, reflecting her association with water and ice.
Personality-wise, Berterai is presented as more calm, collected, and elegant compared to some of her more volatile sisters. She possesses a darkly playful and competitive nature, particularly when it comes to games of strategy. Her primary motivation is to prove her worth to Rubeus and her older sisters, Petz and Calaveras, from whom she desperately seeks approval and fears rejection. She operates under a philosophy that winning is the most important thing in any endeavor, and she views those who play for fun or camaraderie as shallow. This mindset is a product of her environment within the Black Moon Clan, where failure is not tolerated and loyalty is conditional.
Berterai's central role in the story positions her as the primary antagonist for a short arc and as a direct rival to Sailor Mercury, whose civilian identity is the genius student Ami Mizuno. She is dispatched by Rubeus to contaminate a Crystal Point located in a building that hosts a major chess tournament. After a preliminary encounter where Ami is forced to transform, revealing her identity, Berterai enters the same chess competition to face her directly. In the finals, although Ami wins the match fairly, Berterai traps the other Sailor Guardians inside a giant ball of ice. She then forces Ami into a rematch with a cruel twist: for every chess piece Ami loses, a corresponding part of her own body will freeze solid. This plan is ultimately thwarted by the arrival of Tuxedo Mask, who shatters the ice prison.
Berterai's key relationships are complex, particularly with her sisters. She shows a hidden capacity for familial affection, being the only one of her elder sisters who appears genuinely saddened and curious when her younger sister, Koan, is purified by Sailor Moon and abandons their evil cause. This inner conflict contrasts sharply with the cruelty of her older sisters, Petz and Calaveras, who mock her failures and coldly abandon her when she loses the advantage against the Sailor Guardians. Their betrayal pushes Berterai past her breaking point, leading her to discard her elegant facade and attempt a desperate, suicidal attack to freeze herself and her enemies. However, it is the intervention of the redeemed Koan, who appeals to her with sincere sisterly love and the promise of a new life, that allows Berterai to reconsider her path.
This event marks the beginning of her development and redemption. Convinced by Koan that she is not alone and is worthy of love, Berterai lowers her defenses and allows Sailor Moon to use her Moon Crystal Power to purify her of her evil nature. She is the second sister to undergo this heel-face turn. After being purified, she later helps her other sisters see the error of their ways. In the end, Berterai and her siblings are shown living peacefully in 20th-century Tokyo, where they open and run a cosmetics shop together, having fully reformed.
Regarding her notable abilities, Berterai is the counterpart to Sailor Mercury, and both share an affinity for water and ice-based attacks. Her primary offensive technique is called Dark Water. She also demonstrates a high level of strategic thinking, particularly in chess, although she is not above cheating to secure victory. Beyond combat, she possesses hypnotic abilities, which she uses to manipulate ordinary humans, such as the receptionist at the chess tournament. Her most dangerous power, however, is her ability to manipulate water and ice on a large scale, enough to create a massive, impenetrable ice prison or to lower the temperature within a building to a fatal degree in a desperate final attack.
