Description
Kenjirou Tateyama is a character from the anime Mekakucity Actors who serves as a high school teacher and the father of Ayano Tateyama. He is a man with brown hair, black eyes, and a short stubble on his chin, typically seen wearing a white lab coat over a red striped shirt along with dark jeans and black glasses. His height is recorded as 179 centimeters and his weight as 69 kilograms, with a birthday of September 11.
As a teacher, Kenjirou comes across as generally easygoing and approachable, though he is frequently tired. Despite his fatigue, he can be animated and playful, especially when interacting with his students. This is shown in his dynamic with Momo Kisaragi, a popular idol who is his student. He provides her with both stern guidance about her poor grades and a surprising amount of patience, even when faced with her unconventional study methods. He cares deeply for his family, which includes not only his biological daughter Ayano but also his foster children, Tsubomi Kido, Shuuya Kano, and Kousuke Seto. However, his personal life has been marked by significant tragedy. He lost his wife, Ayaka, in a landslide on August 15 while they were conducting research. He was also caught in the same accident but was the only one to return from it, becoming the host of a supernatural entity known as the Snake of Clearing Eyes.
The snake takes possession of his body, primarily at night, to work toward granting its host's deepest wish: to be reunited with his deceased wife. Kenjirou himself is largely unaware of these possessions, believing the lost time to be simply periods of deep sleep. The Snake of Clearing Eyes is a malicious and cunning entity that uses Kenjirou's body to conduct experiments, acting on its own agenda to gather other eye powers. In the process, it orchestrated events that led to the deaths of his two former students, Haruka Kokonose and Takane Enomoto, using them as sacrifices to bring more snakes into the real world.
His role in the story is that of a tragic figure whose grief has been exploited, turning him from a caring father and teacher into an unwitting pawn. His daughter, Ayano, eventually discovers her father's condition. She learns from her late mother's research journal that her father possesses the red eyes characteristic of those with supernatural abilities and that he is being controlled at night by a snake. This discovery sets her on a path that ultimately leads her to investigate her father's secret laboratory at the school, where she finds evidence of his experiments. Through these actions, Kenjirou is central to the underlying mystery of the Kagerou Daze, the series' alternate dimension, as his wish for reunion is the direct cause of the snake's attempts to manipulate reality. Despite the sinister actions taken by the possessing snake, Kenjirou is remembered by his family as a kind man who would never have wanted his children to be harmed in order to see his wife again. The eye ability associated with him is called Clearing Eyes, which is the power that allows the Snake of Clearing Eyes to control his body.
