Description
Marry Kozakura is a quarter-medusa, three-quarters human girl who serves as the fourth member of the Mekakushi Dan. She appears physically around fourteen years old but is chronologically one hundred and forty years old due to the circumstances of her past. Her long white hair and naturally red eyes are distinctive traits inherited from her medusa lineage.
Marry was raised in isolation by her mother, Shion, who warned her that eye contact with humans would turn them to stone. Following this instruction, Marry spent her early childhood hidden away in a forest, never interacting with the outside world. As a young girl, she disobeyed her mother and went outside to play, only to be discovered and attacked by humans. Her mother attempted to rescue her but was killed in the process. Both Marry and her mother entered the Heat Haze at that moment, and Marry acquired her second eye ability, the Combining Eyes. After her mother's death, she continued living alone in the forest for many years.
Her isolation ended when a boy named Kousuke Seto stumbled upon her home. He refused to be frightened by her warnings about eye contact and instead showed her kindness, eventually bringing her to the Mekakushi Dan's hideout. After joining the group, Marry took up a sideline making artificial flowers in her room, which provides a very modest income. However, a traumatic incident in which neighborhood children bullied her when she went into town for supplies left her reluctant to leave the hideout.
Marry is soft-spoken, innocent, and deeply anxious around strangers and large crowds, a direct result of her long isolation and past trauma. Yet she is defined by a profound attachment to her friends in the Mekakushi Dan. She treasures them to the point where she believes she cannot live without them, and this bond drives her most important actions.
Her inherited ability is the Staring Eyes, which allows her to temporarily paralyze anyone who meets her gaze for a short period. This power is a diluted version of the full medusa ability to turn people to stone. In addition, after entering the Heat Haze with her mother, she obtained the Combining Eyes. This far more powerful ability enables her to call upon and gather all the snakes—the manifestations of other eye powers—and, when fully activated, to rewind time itself. In several story routes, the Snake of Clearing Eyes deliberately kills her friends to force Marry to use the Combining Eyes to reset the timeline, hoping to perpetuate its own existence. In the true resolution, Marry is prevented from resetting time and instead uses the gathered snakes to swallow the world into the Heat Haze, fulfilling a long-held wish and erasing the Snake of Clearing Eyes permanently.
Within the Mekakushi Dan, Marry holds a unique position as the granddaughter of Azami, the original medusa who created the eye abilities. This lineage makes her central to the overarching conflict surrounding the Heat Haze. Her relationship with Seto is especially significant, as he was the first person to reach out to her and bring her into a community. She grows closer to all the other members over time, and her desire to protect those bonds becomes her primary motivation to act, even when it means wielding a power that could unravel the world itself.
