Description
Hibiya Amamiya is a young boy who becomes the eighth member of the Mekakushi Dan. At around twelve years old, he stands 140 centimeters tall and has short light brown hair and brown eyes. His typical outfit consists of a white hooded vest over a blue shirt paired with brown shorts and black sandals.
Hailing from a rural area, Hibiya leads a life that is sheltered in some ways, having never owned a cell phone and being largely disconnected from urban流行. Despite this, he demonstrates a maturity that is notable for his age and possesses an unusual talent for cooking. His home life involves strict parents whose punishments for disobedience can be severe, a factor that makes his determination to travel to the city all the more significant.
His primary motivation is his intense devotion to his classmate and crush, Hiyori Asahina. Although he is popular in his own right at school, he considers himself a devoted fan of Hiyori, who comes from a wealthy family and maintains a cool, pointed demeanor. His affection manifests in a somewhat obsessive, yet earnest, manner: he secretly collects photographs of her, keeps the most precious one in his bus pass, and has even created a doll of her that can play her recorded voice. When Hiyori invites him to the city for the summer as her errand-runner, he eagerly accepts, lying to his parents that he is attending special classes to gain permission.
Within the narrative, Hibiya serves as a character deeply affected by the supernatural tragedy at the story’s core. During his trip to the city, he and Hiyori, along with a boy named Konoha, are caught in a fatal accident on August 15th. This event pulls them into the Kagerou Daze, a supernatural realm where he and Hiyori are trapped in a time loop of the same day. Within this loop, Hibiya is forced to repeatedly witness Hiyori die a violent death, unable to prevent it. This traumatic experience defines his role in the present, as he eventually escapes the loop with a supernatural eye ability, but Hiyori does not.
His most significant relationships are marked by this loss. His feelings for Hiyori are the core of his being, a love so strong that it persisted through countless tragedies. Conversely, he initially harbors a strong resentment towards Konoha, who was also present in the Kagerou Daze but was powerless to act, leading Hibiya to accuse him of doing nothing as Hiyori died. A key relationship is formed with Momo Kisaragi. Their first meeting is antagonistic, as Hibiya rudely calls her oba-san, a term that can mean aunt or old lady. However, Momo becomes instrumental in pulling him out of a deep depression following his escape, and through their search for Hiyori, they grow significantly closer, with Hibiya eventually dropping his rude nickname for her.
Hibiya undergoes notable development from a brash and love-struck boy to a more grounded individual marked by tragedy, before being brought back by new friendships. Initially short-tempered and prone to jealousy, especially towards anyone who might attract Hiyori’s attention, his experience in the time loop leaves him disoriented and depressed. Joining the Mekakushi Dan is a turning point. With Momo’s help, he begins to process the trauma of losing Hiyori and becomes determined to find her, gaining a new purpose and a more mature resolve.
His notable ability, which he names the Focusing Eyes, allows him to perceive distant objects and details from an aerial perspective. When used on a living being, it can show him scenes that person has witnessed, and when used on an object, it can reveal its past owners. He acquires this power from a supernatural snake within the Kagerou Daze, but because he gains it right before joining the group, he has very little control over it and finds it difficult to activate. In some variations of the story, he possesses a different power called the Clearing Eyes, which can interfere with and stop the abilities of others.
