Shihai Kuroiro attends U.A. High School as a member of Class 1-B in the hero course. His Quirk, "Black," allows him to merge into and traverse any dark-colored substance, including shadows or naturally black objects. While merged with darkness, he gains enhanced speed, facilitating swift movement and ambush tactics. He later develops the ability to manipulate and possess movable dark entities, demonstrated when he temporarily controlled Fumikage Tokoyami's Dark Shadow during training.
His distinct physical appearance, featuring pitch-black skin, fluffy white hair, and thin gray eyes, is a result of his Quirk. His hero costume comprises a black jumpsuit, light-colored boots, and a silver wristband bearing three rectangular indentations.
Kuroiro exhibits a sly, strategic personality with a flair for dramatic speech and dark themes. He favors deception in combat, setting psychological traps to exploit opponents. Despite his confident combat demeanor, he struggles socially, particularly around girls. He harbors a long-standing crush on classmate Kinoko Komori, often becoming flustered in her presence and misinterpreting casual interactions as romantic interest. This relationship evolves, and they eventually date after graduating and becoming Pro Heroes.
His early activities include participating in the U.A. Sports Festival, where he ranked 30th in the Obstacle Race but did not advance beyond the Cavalry Battle. During the Forest Training Camp, he was critically injured by Mustard's gas quirk in the League of Villains attack. He later passed the Provisional Hero License Exam.
Kuroiro plays a significant role in the Joint Training Battle between Classes 1-A and 1-B. Paired with Itsuka Kendo, Kinoko Komori, and Manga Fukidashi, he devises strategies leveraging his Quirk's synergy with dark environments. Declaring Fumikage Tokoyami a rival due to their darkness-based Quirks, he hijacks Dark Shadow and utilizes Ground Gamma's industrial piping for tactical advantage, contributing to his team's victory.
During the Paranormal Liberation War, he joins the Gunga Mountain Villa Backup Team to support raid operations and prevent villain escapes. Later, he aids in halting Gigantomachia's rampage by deploying distraction tactics to facilitate anesthesia delivery. In the Final War, he helps protect civilians in evacuation tunnels and joins reinforcements against All For One at Mt. Fuji.
Following the war, Kuroiro recovers from injuries and attends U.A.'s graduation ceremony. He becomes a Pro Hero under the alias "Scheming Hero: Vantablack" (or "Vantadark" in English adaptations due to trademark restrictions).
Additional details include his birthday (November 1), height (176 cm), blood type (A), favorite food (squid ink pasta), and affinity for social taboos. His name's kanji translates to "black color" (Kuroiro) and "domination" (Shihai).
