Description
Jun Inoue is a second-year student at Ryuumonbuchi High School and a member of its prestigious mahjong club, where she serves as the vanguard player. Born on September 14, she has a very tall stature, standing at 183 centimeters, which is notably taller than most of her peers and contributes to her striking and somewhat masculine overall appearance. She has short, wild, grey hair and matching grey eyes. Reflecting her personality, her uniform is worn in a very casual, boyish manner, consisting of a male-styled jacket, a loose tie, and sneakers, though she does wear the standard school skirt.
Jun has a very tomboyish personality, and her speech is often rough or masculine. She frequently uses the pronoun "ore," a typically male way of referring to oneself in Japanese, and her teammates sometimes tease her about her manly traits, which visibly embarrasses her and prompts her to insist that she is, in fact, a woman. Despite this, team member Hajime Kunihiro has stated that Jun is like the father of their team. She is also known for being incredibly lazy, somewhat of a pessimist, and has a cynical and snide sense of humor. She is often seen in the company of her teammate Koromo Amae, to whom she is quite close.
Jun plays mahjong in the vanguard position. Her primary skill is a keen ability to read and control the flow of a match. She can sense the ebb and flow of advantageous tiles and is able to disrupt her opponents' strategies by making specific tile calls, such as pons and chis, to redirect favorable tiles away from them and take control of the game. This skill makes her a formidable player capable of amassing large point leads. Her ability is such that she was one of the first characters to perceive a unique and powerful aura emanating from Saki Miyanaga, comparing it to that of her own teammate, Koromo. Additionally, she is noted to be a terrible artist, but conversely, is unexpectedly good at cooking.
Her most significant role in the story comes during the Nagano Prefectural Tournament finals. At the start of the vanguard match, she unintentionally eats the taco belonging to her opponent, Yuuki Kataoka, mistaking it for a gift from a fan. Once play begins, she takes a commanding lead by controlling the flow of the game and consistently countering Yuuki's aggressive East-round play. However, her dominance is challenged when Kazekoshi High School's captain, Mihoko Fukuji, uses her own unique power to assist Yuuki. Caught in a two-pronged attack, Jun begins to struggle. She cannot overcome Mihoko's tactics and her lead evaporates as she is repeatedly forced to discard winning tiles. By the end of the vanguard match, Jun's score has dropped significantly from a high of 136,400 points to a final loss of 12,300 points. Although she is frustrated that Mihoko was able to turn the tables on her, she admits she had a lot of fun and expresses a desire for a rematch, showing a competitive spirit and good sportsmanship.
