Description
Kyōko Suehara is a third-year student at Himematsu High School, the representative of South Osaka in the national tournament. She serves as the team's captain and plays in the achor position during the team competition. Despite her high school rank, she considers herself an ordinary person and approaches mahjong with a cautious, analytical mindset. She is always afraid of losing and constantly prepares for worst-case scenarios, a trait that her teammate Hiroe Atago identifies as her greatest strength. Kyōko acts as the de facto strategist for Himematsu, studying opponents' playing patterns and briefing her teammates before matches. She was responsible for recruiting first-year Suzu Ueshige and convincing Kinue Atago to try out for the regular team, bypassing older members in the process. Her carefulness and ability to read other players make her a reliable captain, though she lacks the flashy supernatural abilities seen in many top players. Instead, her playing style is described as speed-oriented, relying on fast decision-making and efficient hand construction rather than overwhelming power. In the quarterfinals, despite losing the most points among her team, she earned the respect of Saki Miyanaga, who later remarked that she had let the strongest player through and was unsure if she could beat Kyōko again. Kyōko's development is subtle but meaningful: she consistently overcomes her self-doubt and demonstrates that thorough preparation and mental resilience can stand against extraordinary talent. Her key relationships include her teammates at Himematsu, particularly her reliance on the Atago sisters and Suzu Ueshige, and her off-table rivalry with Saki, whom she analyzed intently during their match. Kyōko's notable ability is not a paranormal power but her exceptional analytical skill and speed-focused mahjong, which allows her to compete at the national level without a special gift.
