Description
Maho Yumeno is a second-year student at Takatoobara Middle School, known for her small stature of just 138 centimeters and her birthday on December 20. She is characterized by her short purple hair, which is often tied with a red ribbon on the left side—an accessory that previously belonged to her senior, Nodoka Haramura. Her cheerful yet somewhat ditzy personality is a defining trait; she often speaks in the third person and has a tendency to cry easily. She is also notably directionally challenged, having famously gotten lost or fallen asleep while trying to travel to a tournament venue.

Maho’s primary motivation stems from her deep admiration for Nodoka Haramura, who was her senior in middle school and became her idol after winning a national championship. Inspired by Nodoka, Maho began playing online mahjong under the handle Super Mahocchi, though her skill level initially remained very low. Her greatest strength is a unique and formidable ability: she can accurately mimic the special playing styles and abilities of other mahjong players. This allows her to temporarily perform at an extraordinarily high level, copying techniques such as rapid-fire offensive play, precision defense, or even complex special moves like rinshan kaihou, which she used to surprise the protagonist Saki Miyanaga.

However, this ability has significant limitations. She can only copy a specific person’s ability once per day, and the effect is temporary. More critically, when she is not actively using her mimicry, her fundamental mahjong skills are those of a pure beginner. Once her copied abilities are exhausted, she makes amateurish mistakes, such as calling tiles that leave her hand without a winning combination. Because of this, she is considered a player who can be incredibly strong in short bursts but very weak otherwise.

In the story, Maho serves as a supporting character who provides a unique challenge for the main team from Kiyosumi High School. She and her best friend, Hiroko Murohashi, are former teammates of Nodoka and Yuuki Kataoka. At the request of Kiyosumi’s captain, Hisa Takei, Maho is invited to attend a training camp to act as a special sparring partner. Hisa’s goal was to use Maho’s unpredictable copying ability to instill a sense of caution in the powerful players Saki and Mako, who were unaccustomed to facing an eternal beginner whose playstyle could not be predicted by memory or logic. Her performance at the camp reveals not only her raw potential but also her emotional vulnerability, as she becomes sad when scolded by Nodoka for not focusing on improving her basic skills. Despite her challenges, hints are given that she is diligently training to master her unique talent, indicating a path for future growth.
