Description
Kinue Atago is a second-year student at Himematsu High School, representing South Osaka in the national mahjong tournament. She serves as the team's vice-captain and is the younger sister of her teammate, Hiroe Atago. Born on January 20, she stands 165 centimeters tall, making her the tallest member of her school's team. Her mother, Masae Atago, is the coach of the renowned Senriyama Girls' High School team, placing Kinue within a deeply accomplished mahjong family.
Kinue has long blue hair and blue eyes, and she typically wears red-rimmed glasses. She is known for carrying a spare pair due to being somewhat sensitive about her vision. Her standard attire consists of the Himematsu uniform complemented by black thigh-high stockings.
In terms of personality, Kinue is depicted as more mild-mannered than her older sister, but she also lacks Hiroe's confidence and often doubts her own abilities. A defining trait is her profound admiration for her older sister, which has shaped many of her life choices. This admiration is so strong that she is often characterized as having a siscon, or sister complex. Despite a cool or indifferent first impression, such as greeting her successful sister casually from a waiting room, she is deeply devoted to Hiroe. Her primary motivation is not personal glory but a desire to prove her usefulness to the team and to protect the points that her sister worked to accumulate.
Kinue's path to mahjong is unusual. During middle school, she was a goalkeeper for the soccer club and was talented enough to receive a scholarship offer based on her athletic ability. However, driven by her admiration for her sister's outstanding performance in the sport, she chose to follow Hiroe to Himematsu High School. She entered through the general entrance examination, joined the mahjong club, and was selected as a regular member for the team by the fall tournament of her first year. Her athletic background is occasionally reflected in her actions, most notably when she instinctively kicked away a stuffed penguin belonging to opponent Nodoka Haramura because it looked ominous in her path, a reflex from her days as a goalkeeper.
Throughout the national tournament arc, Kinue's role is a critical one for her team. Entering the match as the vice-captain, her primary objective is to maintain the lead that Hiroe established. The match places her against formidable opponents, including Nodoka Haramura and Hatsumi Usuzumi, the latter of whom possesses a powerful ability centered on the north wind. Kinue struggles with the psychological burden of her responsibilities, feeling a sense of crisis due to her inconsistent performances in previous tournaments. During her match, she applies advice from her analytical teammate, Kyouko Suehara, on how to counter Usuzumi's play, demonstrating her ability to listen and adapt. Although she faces significant pressure and concedes some large hands, she ultimately succeeds in her mission, finishing her round in third place but preserving Himematsu's overall top position for the final captain's match. After her match, she is seen apologizing to her team for not extending their lead further, revealing her earnest and somewhat self-critical nature.
Kinue's key relationships are central to her character. Her dynamic with her sister Hiroe is the most significant, as she constantly measures herself against Hiroe's accomplishments and seeks her approval. She shares a close friendship with her peer Suzu Ueshige, whom she addresses by her first name. Furthermore, she has a cousin relationship with Hiroko Funakubo from Senriyama Girls' High School. Her development is a continuous journey from a self-doubting player to a more reliable team member. While she struggles with anxiety about her lack of skill compared to her sister and mother, her performance on the national stage, where she successfully defended a lead against powerful opponents, represents a significant step in her growth as a mahjong player.
Regarding her abilities, Kinue is described as a digital-style player who relies on logic and safety. Her strategy focuses on reaching tenpai, or a ready hand, quickly and playing defensively to protect her points. She is skilled at reading her opponents' styles and accommodating her play accordingly. This is particularly evident when she avoids discarding north and east tiles to counter Hatsumi Usuzumi's ability. When she does shift to an offensive strategy, she is capable of winning consecutive, high-scoring hands. Her background as a goalkeeper also appears in supplementary material, where an ability associated with the number one tile, a reference to a goalkeeper's jersey number, involves the one of circles tile.
