Description
Raku Ichijo is the main protagonist of the romantic comedy series Nisekoi. He is a high school student and the only son of the leader of the Shuei Clan, a Yakuza organization. Despite this family background, he wishes for an ordinary, peaceful life and hopes to become a civil servant rather than follow in his family's footsteps. He is generally kind, responsible, sincere, and loyal, with a strong sense of justice, and he can be highly meticulous, feeling unable to be satisfied unless he does things properly once he commits to them. He has a fondness for sweet foods and tends to become flustered around girls he admires, especially his classmate and childhood acquaintance Kosaki Onodera.
Raku's central motivation is shaped by a promise from his childhood. He carries a locket given to him by a girl he met years ago, and he hopes to rediscover that girl and fulfill the promise they made. He holds an idealized view of love and dreams of someday marrying a traditional Japanese woman, a Yamato Nadeshiko. His personal desires are complicated by his family obligations when his father and the leader of the rival Bee Hive Gang agree to settle their feud by pairing their children. Raku is therefore forced into a fake romantic relationship with Chitoge Kirisaki, and the two must convincingly act as a couple for three years to prevent a gang war.
In the story, Raku is the central figure around whom the romantic complications revolve. He must maintain the false relationship with Chitoge while also dealing with his secret feelings for Kosaki, and the mystery of the locket persists throughout the series. Several girls possess keys that may fit the locket, including Chitoge, Kosaki, Marika Tachibana, and Yui Kanakura, and the question of which one is his promised childhood friend drives much of the plot. Raku is frequently placed in awkward situations to protect the secret of his fake relationship, particularly when Chitoge's protective bodyguard Claude tries to expose the arrangement.
His relationship with Chitoge is the emotional core of the series. They begin as fierce opponents who constantly argue, but over time their hostility gradually develops into genuine affection. His relationship with Kosaki is defined by mutual but unspoken feelings, creating the main love triangle. He also forms important bonds with other characters, including Tsugumi Seishiro, who initially appears as a dangerous obstacle but eventually becomes a friend, and Marika Tachibana, who declares herself his fiancée. His best friend Shuu Maiko serves as his closest confidant, and the weight of his family's legacy influences his desire to break away from the Yakuza stereotype and live honestly.
Raku experiences notable growth across the series. At one point he suffers amnesia after being struck while trying to protect Chitoge, and during this period he becomes especially sincere, charming everyone around him and unintentionally offering a clue that the girl with the key to his locket has brown or black eyes rather than blue. Through his experiences with the people around him, he gradually understands the difference between his idealized image of love and real emotional connection. By the end of the story, he recognizes that his true feelings are for Chitoge. When Kosaki confesses to him and is revealed to be the girl from his childhood promise, he gently rejects her, having already chosen Chitoge, and he confesses his love to Chitoge, who returns his feelings.
Raku possesses no supernatural abilities. His notable strengths are his intelligence, problem-solving skills, and emotional insight, which allow him to navigate complicated social situations. He is not particularly skilled in combat and instead relies on wit and strategy, often resolving conflicts through words and reasoning rather than physical confrontation.
