Description
Aki Mikage is a first-year student in the Department of Dairy Science at Yezo Agricultural High School and a central figure in the story. She is a girl with short, purplish-black hair and wide eyes of the same color, often seen in the standard school uniform or practical jumpsuits for her agricultural classes. When pursuing her passion for horses, she typically wears an English equestrian outfit.
Aki is the only child of the Mikage family, a clan of farmers in Hokkaido for more than four generations. Growing up on the family farm, she learned the basics of farming and livestock care from a young age. Her family expected her to inherit the farm, a path she was being groomed for, and they sent her to Yezo Agricultural High School to continue the family legacy. However, Aki secretly harbored a deep fascination and love for horses and wanted to pursue a horse-related career. Initially, she had resigned herself to her family's expectations, but a key moment in the story occurs when a classmate helps her reveal her true feelings to her family. This leads to her family reluctantly agreeing to support her dream of studying horses, on the condition that she graduates from college.
In terms of personality, Aki is a kind and positive person, but she is notably non-intellectual and dense. She struggles with academics, particularly in subjects like history, and is often poor at sensing the emotions of the people around her. This dense nature means she is initially unaware that several boys, including her classmate, have romantic feelings for her. However, her focus and aptitude shine when it comes to horses and horse-related subjects, demonstrating great talent in horseback riding.
Her role in the story is deeply tied to her family's farm and her personal aspirations. The conflict between her duty to inherit the family business and her dream of working with horses is a central part of her character arc. Over the course of the story, she develops from a girl resigned to her fate into someone who actively pursues her own goals with the support of her friends. Aki also serves as a grounding presence, offering a different perspective from the protagonist, who comes from a city background.
Aki's key relationships are primarily with her family and her classmates. Her relationship with a particular classmate is significant; he works as a part-time employee on her family's farm, and she eventually realizes she has romantic feelings for him, which she admits to later in the manga. He also promises to be her tutor to help her get into an agricultural college, which is part of the deal she made with her family.
Regarding her abilities, Aki possesses a wide range of practical skills from her upbringing. These include the basics of farming, livestock care, processing chickens, making bacon, and processing milk and cheese. She also has a talent for horseback riding and is a member of the school's Equestrian Club.
