Description
Nobunaga Oda is the protagonist of the anime Nobunaga The Fool. He is the legitimate heir of the country of Owari on the Eastern Planet and is loosely inspired by the historical Japanese warlord of the same name. He is the elder brother of Nobukatsu Oda and Ichihime, and the son of Lord Nobuhide Oda.
He is widely known by the epithet The Fool due to his carefree and unconventional behavior. Nobunaga tends to speak the truth about everything without regard for social expectations, and he is often reckless in his actions. Despite this, he is deeply loyal to his comrades and looks out for them in battle. He is not afraid to take risks, and his personal motto seems to be to always look forward rather than dwell on the past. This bold, forward-looking nature is what ultimately earns him the affection of Queen Himiko and perhaps also of Jeanne Kaguya d'Arc.
His primary motivation is to shake up the existing order and bring about a new era. After witnessing the brutal defeat of his clan by the Takeda forces, he swears to conquer the world alongside his friends Akechi Mitsuhide and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He is driven by a desire to revolutionize the way wars for domination are fought. His encounter with Jeanne, who arrives from the Western Star following prophecies of a Savior King, solidifies his role as a revolutionary figure.
In the story, Nobunaga serves as the central character around whom the conflict between the Eastern and Western Stars revolves. He becomes the pilot of a giant battle armor that he names The Fool, and he wields the Sacred Treasure of Lightning, given to him by Himiko as part of a marital alliance. His role evolves from a dismissed heir into a leader who challenges the established powers and ultimately reshapes the world.
Key relationships include his retainers: Mitsuhide, who advises him and helps conceal Jeanne's identity, and Hideyoshi, who handles logistics. His bond with his sister Ichihime is one of mutual care, and his relationship with his father Nobuhide is strained due to the court's preference for his brother Nobukatsu. The alliance with Himiko is both political and personal, as she offers him the Sacred Treasure and later becomes his fiancée. His connection with Jeanne is central to the narrative; she sees him as the prophesied Savior King, and together they face the forces of King Arthur and General Caesar.
Throughout the series, Nobunaga undergoes significant development. Initially seen by his own father and court as a fool unsuited for leadership, he gradually proves his worth through decisive action and strategic boldness. He learns to temper his impulsiveness with the wisdom of those around him, yet never loses his core determination. His ability to see the true nature of things, a unique gift, allows him to perceive the underlying truths that others miss, which becomes crucial in navigating the complex political and supernatural conflicts.
Notable abilities include his skill in piloting the giant battle armor The Fool, his talent for swordsmanship, and his capacity to wield the Sacred Treasure of Lightning. He is also a competent archer and a natural leader who inspires fierce loyalty in his followers. His greatest strength, however, is his unyielding will to move forward and create change, a trait that defines his entire character arc.
