Description
Jyunyou Dio Weinberg is the deuteragonist of the anime Buddy Complex, serving as the primary partner to the protagonist. He is a sixteen-year-old officer holding the rank of Second Lieutenant within the Free Pact Alliance, where he is recognized as an ace pilot of the highest caliber, often described as one of the most handsome in the Allied forces. His combat specialization is piloting the XV-7002 Bradyon, a state-of-the-art Coupling system-equipped Valiancer, and later its upgraded form, the Bradyon Next. He has blonde hair and blue eyes, with a physical appearance that reflects his disciplined military bearing.

Dio’s background is defined by a profound personal tragedy that occurred prior to the series' main events. During a previous engagement, the Allied fleet he was part of was forced to retreat, and in the subsequent enemy assault on the Oomura base in his hometown, his mother was killed and his younger sister, Fiona, was left paralyzed. This incident created a deep rift with his father, Sadamichi, who held Dio responsible for failing to protect the family, leading the young pilot to carry a heavy burden of guilt and self-blame. Driven by this remorse, he voluntarily entered the Lake Louise special operations school to become a Coupling pilot, where he was trained alongside his contemporary, Fromm Vantarhei.

In terms of personality, Dio presents a stoic, detached, and often unfriendly exterior. He is typically taciturn, practical, and strict in his adherence to military protocol, which initially makes him distrustful of the protagonist, Aoba Watase. Beneath this cold surface, however, he possesses a strong sense of justice and a deeply caring nature, particularly concerning his family and, later, his friends. His behavior often leans toward the tsundere archetype, displaying outward irritation or hostility that masks genuine concern and growing loyalty. He is highly professional and takes his duties seriously, yet his internal motivation is heavily influenced by a desire to regain his father's respect and atone for his perceived past failure.

Dio’s primary motivation evolves from a solitary quest for atonement to a shared commitment to his partner. Initially, he is driven to succeed as a pilot to prove his worth. However, his narrative arc centers on his relationship with the protagonist, Aoba Watase. After a successful pairing, the two form an exceptionally rare and powerful Nice Coupling, a process that enhances their Valiancer's performance. As they fight together, the waveforms of their brain patterns shift, causing Dio to lose compatibility with any other potential partner, cementing Aoba as his only viable coupling partner. Over time, he moves from distrust to an unshakeable bond, going as far as to disobey direct orders to rescue Aoba and risking his life to pilot the unstable experimental 0-series Skyknight to save him.

His key relationships are central to his development. With Aoba Watase, he forms an irreplaceable bond that becomes the emotional core of his growth, marked by initial conflict, growing respect, and eventual mutual trust. With his sister, Fiona, he shares a protective affection, and it is through Aoba that he learns she does not blame him for the accident, which helps alleviate his guilt. His relationship with his father, Sadamichi, is strained and tense due to the tragedy, though it shows signs of potential reconciliation. He also has a history with Fromm Vantarhei as a former coupling candidate, leading to a competitive dynamic.

Throughout the story, Dio serves as the chain of command’s direct link to the mysterious Aoba and the practical counterpoint to Aoba’s naive idealism. His primary role is that of the seasoned soldier who initially doubts the newcomer but ultimately fights alongside him as an equal. His development is marked by his gradual opening of his heart. A significant turning point occurs when, after forcibly coupling in the prototype Skyknight, he and Aoba exchange memories, finally confirming Aoba’s truth about being from the past and solidifying his resolve to help him. By the final battle, he has fully accepted his role as Aoba’s partner, and after the war, he chooses to follow Aoba back to the modern era, making him stronger and more emotionally open.

As a pilot, Dio possesses exceptional combat reflexes and technical mastery over his Coupling system Valiancers. He is proficient with standard armaments like the Nector rifle and sword and adapts quickly to new systems. His most notable ability is his perfect waveform synchronization with Aoba Watase, which allows them to achieve Coupling for extended periods, far surpassing the standard time limit. This synchronization reaches a point where their bond becomes so deep it can briefly withstand the immense strain of piloting unfinished prototype units.
