Description
Ketto is a young boy who appears in a key early sequence of Kiki's Delivery Service. He is four years old and lives in the seaside town of Koriko, where Kiki has recently arrived to begin her year of independent training as a witch. Ketto is the son of a woman whose sister, Maki, is Kiki's first customer. Maki hires Kiki to deliver a birthday present for her nephew, which is a stuffed black cat that bears a striking resemblance to Kiki's own companion, Jiji. The present is contained within an ornate birdcage.
In terms of appearance, Ketto has light brown hair and brown eyes. He is dressed in casual children's clothing, consisting of a white undershirt, green pants, white socks, and light blue shoes. His personality, as shown in his brief scene, is that of a typical young child. He is initially filled with excitement and happiness at the prospect of receiving a gift from his aunt, shouting for it to be given to him immediately. However, this excitement quickly turns to disappointment and disinterest when he actually sees the toy. Upon opening the cage, he finds it is not the exciting present he had hoped for, and he exclaims that the stuffed cat is dumb.
Ketto's role in the story is central to one of the film's most memorable comedic situations. During the delivery, Kiki is attacked by crows, causing the real stuffed toy to fall out of the cage and be lost. In a panic, she substitutes Jiji for the missing doll and delivers him to Ketto. When Ketto opens the cage, he pulls the real Jiji out and briefly tosses him around, unimpressed with what he believes is a new toy. He then turns his attention to watching television while waiting for his birthday party guests to arrive. His mother prompts him multiple times to switch the television off, which he eventually does. This sequence places Ketto in a significant relationship with Jiji, as the cat is forced to play the part of a lifeless doll under the boy's rough handling. Ketto also has a dog named Jeff, who later helps Jiji when Kiki returns to exchange the real Jiji for the recovered stuffed cat.
The character of Ketto does not undergo any notable development, as he appears only in this single scene. His purpose is to serve as a minor obstacle and a source of humor, highlighting the chaotic and often difficult start to Kiki's new business. He has no magical or otherwise notable abilities, being an ordinary, somewhat bratty young boy whose behavior contrasts with the magical nature of the protagonist.
