Hiryu Rin, operating as the Pro Hero Dragon Shroud, trains in U.A. High School's Class 1-B. Originally from China, he moved to Japan in elementary school and speaks fluent Japanese. His father is the Hong Kong-based martial arts hero Azure Emperor, master of Dragon-Style Kung Fu. Rin is Ryukyu's nephew; his mother, one of Ryukyu's sisters, returned to Japan due to discomfort within Azure Emperor's circle. This upbringing immersed him in traditional Chinese heroism and intense childhood training.
He possesses lightly tanned skin, black hair styled in a low shoulder-length braid, and reptilian-shaped eyes with notably small irises. His initial hero costume incorporates Jiangshi-inspired elements: knee-high boots, a high-collared cloud-patterned bodysuit, a red belt holding supplement pouches, and large gauntlets. A talisman-like visor covers half his face, inscribed with characters for "defense," "body," "guarantee," and "life." His costume later shifts to feature blue as the dominant color.
Personality-wise, Hiryu is serious, diligent, and academically focused. He displays strategic thinking, like suggesting collaborative Quirk use during the U.A. Sports Festival obstacle course. Classmates view him as reliable due to his firm character. He sometimes uses the Chinese exclamation "Aiya!" Traditional Chinese and Japanese cultural elements deeply influence him, fostering strong heritage pride. This leads to tension with Mashirao Ojiro, whom he believes lacks cultural pride; Hiryu aims to defeat Ojiro in combat to provoke self-reflection. Early exposure to his father's traditional values included outdated views on women's capabilities, causing friction with classmates like Setsuna Tokage. Tokage's rejection of his patronizing attitude and his unrequited crush prompt him to reconsider these views.
His Quirk, Scales, lets him generate durable reptilian scales from his skin for offense or defense. Scale generation requires collagen and calcium, necessitating supplements during prolonged combat. He employs three Ultimate Moves: Leafy Scales (firing stored scales as projectiles via gauntlets), Scales of Wrath (protruding scales outward as spikes), and Inner Carapace (full-body scale armor). His Scale Gauntlets store and rapidly discharge scales like a Gatling gun. A one-time manifestation of a 46-foot dragon tail hinted at latent Quirk potential, though unsustainable. Statistically, he ranks C in Power and Speed, B in Technique, and A in Intelligence and "Chineseness".
Key combat engagements include the Joint Training Battle, where he detected Tsuyu Asui's camouflage and defended with scales but was overpowered by her leg strength. His accuracy was demonstrated by destroying one of Denki Kaminari's pointers without harming Jurota Shishida. He participated in the Final War against the Paranormal Liberation Front. Post-graduation, he becomes a Pro Hero.
Relationships include a bond with fellow foreign student Pony Tsunotori and a reptile-themed association with Setsuna Tokage. Winter poses challenges due to his Quirk's thermoregulatory limitations, mitigated by training. His adaptation to Japanese technology is ongoing, reflected in his simple hero gear and flip phone usage.
