Description
Jubei is a small, cat-like beastkin who stands as one of the legendary Six Heroes, a group of warriors who fought against the Black Beast in the Dark War. Despite his diminutive and unassuming physical appearance, he is widely regarded as the strongest being on the planet, a title earned through centuries of combat experience. Originally known by the name Mitsuyoshi, he adopted the name Jubei after the events of the Dark War. He is the progenitor of the Kaka clan, a race of cat-like creatures who were genetically engineered from his own DNA, which explains his physical resemblance to characters like Taokaka. Notably, he wears an eyepatch over his right eye, having lost it long ago while protecting his allies from a remnant of the Black Beast.

In terms of personality, Jubei presents a mix of traits that blend the wisdom of age with a grounded, compassionate nature. He can be a little uncouth or blunt in his manner of speaking, but this is paired with a deep sense of generosity and dignity. He is often described as being more human than humans themselves, as he is easily moved by emotion and holds a strong sense of justice and duty. He believes firmly in protecting humanity and his friends, and he carries the weight of his long history, including the trauma of losing many of his clan to the Black Beast, which fuels a deep-seated hatred for the monster. His wisdom is tempered by personal failings, as he has a known but currently unexplained awkward and strained relationship with his daughter, Kokonoe.

Jubei’s primary motivation is to safeguard his friends and the world from threats, a drive that has defined his actions for hundreds of years. He witnessed the horrors of the Dark War firsthand and lost his partner, the powerful mage Konoe (later known as Nine the Phantom), who was murdered by the treacherous Yūki Terumi. This loss continues to affect him deeply. Despite his advanced age, he refuses to simply retire, instead continuing to wander the world, offering his strength and guidance where it is needed most.

Within the story of BlazBlue Alter Memory, Jubei serves as an iconic figure from a bygone heroic age. He acts as a mentor and a mysterious, powerful ally who appears to guide other characters. His most significant role is as the master of the protagonist, Ragna the Bloodedge, whom he personally trained in swordsmanship. He also trained Jin Kisaragi and Platinum the Trinity. In the events of the anime, he is shown wandering the outskirts of Kagutsuchi, where he encounters Jin Kisaragi. Jin, who is singularly focused on finding his brother Ragna, dismisses Jubei as a mere nuisance, not believing he could truly be one of the legendary Six Heroes. Jubei, unfazed by this reaction, quickly leaves the younger warrior with a cryptic offer, stating that if Jin truly needs to speak with him, he will be waiting.

His key relationships are central to his character. As Ragna's master, he is the one who saved Ragna and his siblings and taught him how to fight. With Kokonoe, his daughter, his relationship is notably strained and awkward, a source of personal regret for him. He was the husband of Nine the Phantom, and his love for her persists even after her transformation and death. He is also a former comrade-in-arms of Hakumen, Valkenhayn, and the other surviving heroes of the Dark War. These connections tie him directly to the deepest roots of the ongoing conflict.

In terms of development, Jubei is a static character in the sense that he already represents the pinnacle of wisdom and power; his arc is not about becoming stronger or wiser, but about passing on his legacy and confronting the sins of the past. He works diligently to protect his friends and guide the next generation, such as Ragna, to a resolution of the conflicts that originated in his own era. He shows a willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good, demonstrating a resolve that comes from having lived through multiple apocalyptic events.

His notable abilities are as formidable as his reputation suggests. He is a master swordsman, wielding the Nox Nyctores, a powerful and dangerous magical weapon known as Mucro Somnio: Musashi. He fights with incredible speed and precision, using a combination of his katana and his own razor-sharp claws. His Drive, a unique fighting technique, is known as Shiranui or Shiranui: Steel. These abilities, combined with his centuries of experience against monsters and mages alike, make him a nearly unbeatable opponent in direct combat, proving that his small stature belies a truly legendary power.
