Description
Noel Vermillion is a central character in the anime BlazBlue Alter Memory. She is a former lieutenant of the Novus Orbis Librarium, a powerful organization that governs the world. Initially, she is assigned the task of tracking down and returning the AWOL officer Jin Kisaragi to his post. However, her involvement in the conflict soon reveals far deeper secrets about her own origins and destiny.

Noel is a nervous but kind-hearted young woman. She aims to help others wherever she goes, and she possesses a strong sense of duty and justice. Despite her insecurity and self-doubt, she is sincere and hardworking. Her personality is marked by a gentle, almost timid demeanor, and she is easily won over by small, cute animals. She has an inferiority complex regarding her physical appearance and tends to avoid social situations when possible, preferring online shopping and writing poems that she never shows to anyone.

Her background is complex. Noel was originally created as Mu-12, the twelfth Boundary Interface Prime Field Device, an artificial human designed by Sector Seven to access the power of the Azure deep within the Boundary. An experiment gone wrong led to the destruction of her birthplace, the Fifth Hierarchical City of Ibukido, but she survived with no memory of the event. She was discovered and adopted by the Vermillion family, who raised her as their foster daughter. Due to her outstanding combat activity and high synchronization rates with Armagus, she entered the Military Academy and later became a high-ranking member of the NOL. She was made Jin Kisaragi’s subordinate, though Jin treated her poorly because of her resemblance to his sister, Saya.

Motivations drive Noel throughout the story. She seeks to protect others and to understand her own identity. After her initial awakening as the Eye of the Blue in the events that unfold, she gains the ability to see the distant and recent memories of people she touches. This power, combined with her growing awareness of her true nature, pushes her to confront her past and her role in the world. In BlazBlue Alter Memory, her journey involves a fate-altering battle that shapes the world’s destiny. She is determined to prevent the catastrophic plans of Izanami and to protect those she cares about, especially Ragna the Bloodedge and her friends.

Key relationships include her bond with Ragna, who becomes a protector and caretaker figure for her after she begins staying with him. She also shares complex ties with Jin Kisaragi, who mirrors her association with Saya, and with Tsubaki Yayoi, a close friend from the NOL. Her relationship with Kokonoe and other members of Sector Seven becomes important as she recovers her lost memories. She also interacts with Lambda-11 and Nu-13, replicas of Saya that share her form.

Her development is significant. Starting as an uncertain and insecure soldier, she gradually becomes more confident and assertive. She learns to accept her true identity as Mu-12 and the immense power that comes with it. By the end of Alter Memory, she has grown into a key figure in the battle against the NOL and the forces threatening the world, retaining her gentle personality but gaining the resolve and strength to fight for what is right.

Notable abilities include wielding the Nox Nyctores Arcus Diabolus Bolverk, a set of powerful revolvers, and later the Lux Sanctus Murakumo, a Murakumo unit that grants her immense combat capabilities. She is a skilled gunfighter, using a style known as Gun-kata, and her Drive ability, Chain Revolver, allows her to perform rapid chain combos. As the Eye of the Blue, she can perceive the memories of people she touches. In her true form as Mu-12, she possesses even greater destructive power, including the ability to access the Azure and unleash devastating attacks. She is also a Boundary Interface Prime Field Device, making her a perfect reflection of the Origin’s soul. Her abilities are complemented by her cybernetic enhancements, giving her impressive physical strength and speed.
