Description
Enjin Hiizumi serves as the primary antagonist in the story of Yozakura Quartet ~Hana no Uta~. He is a tall figure, standing at 179cm, who presents himself as a descendant of the branch family of the Hiizumi clan that was forcibly sent to another dimension as a sacrifice in the past. His ultimate goal is to exact vengeance for this ancestral grievance by fusing the human world with the realm of youkai, a plan he intends to accomplish by harnessing the immense power of the Seven Pillars, the spiritual cherry trees that protect the town of Sakurashin.

To exist and operate in the living world, Enjin has taken possession of the body of Gin Nanami, the beloved older brother of Ao Nanami and a close friend to the protagonist, Akina Hiizumi. This act of possession is central to his character, as it forces the story's heroes to confront a foe who wears a familiar face. The possession is not absolute, as Gin's soul remains alive within his own body. This lingering presence causes Enjin to unconsciously exhibit some of Gin's habits and mannerisms, adding a layer of complexity to his villainy. His personality is marked by a deep-seated bitterness and a cruel, calculating nature, as he shows little regard for the emotional pain he causes by using Gin's form to fight against his own sister and friends. He is driven almost entirely by a desire for revenge against the main Hiizumi family, making him a relentless and dangerous adversary.

In the narrative, Enjin is the instigator behind the strange and dangerous incidents that plague Sakurashin. His role is to challenge the town's fragile peace and force Akina to confront the dark history of his own family. Early in the Hana no Uta anime, he is shown causing chaos for his own amusement, such as summoning lightning to transform goldfish into giant, bouncing monsters. He later orchestrates more serious threats, including kidnapping Ao to lure his enemies into a trap. He is often accompanied by an associate, Eiji Shinozuka, and is opposed by the members of the Hiizumi Life Counseling Office, particularly Hime Yarizakura and Akina. The personal stakes of this conflict are extremely high for Akina, who is reluctant to use his full power against Enjin for fear of destroying Gin's soul.

Enjin possesses a formidable and unique set of abilities. By virtue of being in Gin's body, he can utilize the powers of the Satori, which include telepathy. He uses this ability not just to read minds but also to distort the perceptions of others and even disguise his appearance. As a member of the Hiizumi clan, he also has access to their inherent power, which is the ability to "drop" or "tune" youkai, sending them to another dimension. However, as a descendant of the branch family, this power manifests differently, allowing him to forcefully expel youkai from objects or people into the world, effectively mass-producing monstrous "fallen beings" to do his bidding. Throughout his battles with the protectors of Sakurashin, he has also learned and mastered the principles of onmyōdō, a traditional system of divination and spellcasting. His knowledge of the afterlife and the other dimension is unmatched, making him the only known individual in the world who understands its true nature.

Over the course of the story, the certainty of Enjin's identity as a simple descendant is called into question. The discovery of a letter written by the original Enjin Hiizumi, which declared the extinction of the branch family, sows doubt about his claims. This mystery surrounding his true nature is a key part of his development, hinting that his existence is far more complex than it initially appears. He is not merely a vengeful ghost but a crucial piece in a larger historical puzzle involving the Hiizumi family's dark past, serving as a direct consequence of the original sin that allowed the town of Sakurashin to exist.
