Description
Eiji Shinozuka is a hanyou, a being with youkai heritage, who serves as the secretary and bodyguard to Kazuyoshi Morino, the mayor of a town neighboring Sakurashinmachi. His appearance is marked by white hair, typically swept back from his face, and yellow eyes. He is sometimes affectionately called Zuka-chan by his acquaintance Kotoha Isone.

Eiji possesses a personality defined by an almost absolute code of loyalty and duty, reminiscent of historical samurai. His devotion to his lord, Kazuyoshi Morino, is his primary motivator, leading him to follow orders without complaint or outward expression of personal conflict, even when they might contradict his own sense of ethics. Despite this stern and focused exterior, he personally favors a merciful and fair approach to dealing with people. He also has a playful and somewhat lonely side that he rarely shows, occasionally making mistakes like confusing meeting locations or asking others to join him for tea or shopping.

His background is rooted in a childhood incident in Sakurashinmachi, where he fell and was saved by Makiharu Hiizumi. Plagued by guilt over the trouble he felt he caused, Eiji decided to leave his hometown. With the help of Machi Yarizakura, he was introduced to Kazuyoshi Morino, an aspiring mayoral candidate, in a neighboring town. Eiji stayed and eventually became Morino's assistant, driven by a deep-seated sense of obligation to repay the mayor for taking him in. In the storyline of Hana no Uta, his origins and alliance remain consistent with this background, differing from his role in earlier anime adaptations where he served a different master.

In his role within the story, Eiji acts as a capable and loyal agent for Mayor Morino. While he is not a member of the main protagonist group, he is a significant supporting character, and his actions are often tied to his master's political and personal interests relative to Sakurashinmachi. His key relationship is with Morino, whom he serves with unwavering fidelity, and he maintains a cooperative stance toward the main characters from Sakurashinmachi following certain incidents.

Regarding his development, Eiji is portrayed as a naturally secretive individual, and not much is known about his deeper history or feelings. His journey primarily involves reconciling his sense of duty with his personal ethics, although he mostly remains silent and follows his orders. There is a suggestion that he is curious about other hanyou like himself, hinting at a potential for personal growth beyond his strict role.

Eiji is notable for his enhanced physical abilities. He demonstrates greatly increased strength, enough to lift a moped with one hand, and remarkable speed, capable of evading a hail of gunfire from a machine gun. In Yozakura Quartet ~Hana no Uta~, when he utilizes his superhuman speed, a visual cue occurs as his hair and eyebrows take on a pink glow.
