Description
Jin Ohtomo is the homeroom teacher for Harutora Tsuchimikado and his classmates at the Onmyo Academy. He is a man who outwardly presents a carefree, laid-back, and sometimes quirky demeanor, often speaking with a Kansai dialect and a seemingly irreverent attitude toward school authorities. This casual facade, however, belies his sharp intellect, deep sense of responsibility for his students, and formidable power as a first-class onmyouji.

His background is rooted in the highest echelons of the magical world. Ohtomo was once a member of the Twelve Divine Generals, an elite group of onmyouji, where he was known by the nickname The Shadow due to his role in conducting highly secretive and covert missions. Prior to becoming a teacher, he worked as a magic investigator in the Onmyo Agency, serving under Daizen Amami. It was during this time that he had a fateful and brutal encounter with the legendary and dangerous onmyouji, Ashiya Douman. In order to escape and survive, Ohtomo sacrificed his right leg, which was replaced with a prosthetic that forces him to walk with a cane. This event forced him to retreat from active frontline duty.

Ohtomo's primary motivation, after seeking a quiet life, is to protect his students, especially Natsume Tsuchimikado, whom he was assigned to observe and safeguard by Amami. Despite his claims of wanting a peaceful existence as a lecturer, his actions repeatedly demonstrate a willingness to risk everything for the sake of those under his care. His role in the story evolves significantly from a supportive mentor to a key operative working from the shadows. He serves as a crucial source of guidance and protection for Harutora and his friends, while also maneuvering through the complex political and magical conspiracies that surround them.

His key relationships are complex and define much of his character arc. He shares a deep, albeit antagonistic, bond with Ashiya Douman. After a second confrontation where Ohtomo outsmarted and defeated Douman in a magical duel, he achieved a unique victory, but the battle left his hair permanently white as a result of spiritual damage. In a surprising turn, he later forms a dangerous contract with Douman, binding the powerful sorcerer as his shikigami. This uneasy alliance causes him to be viewed with suspicion, even by his students. Ohtomo also has a tense, competitive history with his former junior, Zenjirou Kogure, and a past as one of the Three Crows of the 36th cohort, a group of students known for being troublemakers. He also acts as a mentor to the onmyouji Reiji Kagami, further linking him to the main cast.

Throughout the story, Jin Ohtomo shows considerable development. He begins as an enigmatic teacher deliberately hiding his true power and past. After losing his leg and seemingly retreating from the magical world, he is drawn back into conflict, eventually choosing to abandon his quiet life to become a fugitive. He adopts the alias White Yatagarasu or Three-Legged Crow, becoming a powerful and feared figure in the magical underworld, with his name appearing on the Onmyo Agency's blacklist second only to Harutora. His journey explores themes of sacrifice, the burden of power, and the moral compromises required to protect what is important.

In terms of abilities, Jin Ohtomo is considered a first-class onmyouji with exceptional skill in advanced Imperial-style onmyoudou. He is a master of talismans and curse techniques, and is highly proficient in trickery and strategy, often using bluffs and deception alongside actual power. His greatest feat is his victory over Ashiya Douman, proving he is one of the few individuals capable of contending with such a legendary threat. He also controls powerful shikigami, including a black dog named Zentarou and, later, the oni Gozu and Mezu. He is intelligent and a known activist against the school's harshest educational policies.
