TV-Series
Description
Koki Furita, known in the series as Kouki Furihata, is a first-year point guard for Seirin High School’s basketball team. He is one of the shorter players on the roster, standing at 170 centimeters, and he has medium-length brown hair and wide eyes. His quiet and timid nature makes him prone to nervousness and he is easily intimidated by stronger opponents, but this same caution translates into a careful and reliable playing style when he is on the court. He began playing basketball after a girl he liked said she would date him if he became the number one at something, which motivated him to aim for the top in the sport.

In the story, Furihata initially serves as a bench player alongside his classmates Kouichi Kawahara and Hiroshi Fukuda, rarely getting playing time due to the strength of the regular starters. He is close friends with these two and the three of them often support the team from the sidelines. His role expands during the Winter Cup, particularly in the crucial match against Rakuzan, where he is substituted into the game and manages to maintain his composure under intense pressure. He successfully resets the offense and passes to Tetsuya Kuroko, leading to Seirin’s first basket in a significant scoring drought. This moment marks a key point in his development, showing his ability to step up when the team needs him.

Furihata’s personality is defined by his shyness, self-doubt, and a tendency to be nervous, but he also possesses a sincere and positive attitude. Among the first-year students he is known by the nickname “Furi.” He speaks softly and generally avoids risk, preferring to follow the team’s strategies carefully. His cautious nature means he rarely makes flashy plays, but he is a disciplined team player who understands the fundamentals. Under the guidance of his more experienced teammates, he gradually learns to trust his own abilities.

His primary strengths are not physical or technical; he lacks the athleticism and advanced skills of many other players. Instead, his value lies in his careful decision-making and his ability to avoid reckless mistakes. When he is on the floor, he can manage the game’s tempo effectively and provide a steady presence when the team needs to regroup.

Furihata’s key relationships include his friendships with Kawahara and Fukuda, with whom he spends most of his time on the bench. He respects his upperclassmen, especially captain Junpei Hyuga and the team’s stars like Kuroko and Taiga Kagami. Kuroko addresses him as “Furihata-kun,” and the two have a supportive rapport. Furihata looks up to the stronger players and is inspired by their determination.

Throughout the series, Furihata develops from a nervous benchwarmer into a player who can be counted on to execute plays under pressure. His most significant growth occurs during the Winter Cup final against Rakuzan, where he overcomes his fear and contributes directly to Seirin’s victory. This arc underscores the series’ theme that even less naturally gifted individuals can make a difference through perseverance and teamwork.
