Description
Charles Bonaparte is a prominent character from the second season of the Freezing anime adaptation. She is a third-year student representing Genetics France, where she holds the rank of number one in her class and is recognized as the third-strongest Pandora in the world. Her petite stature and cream-colored hair, often accompanied by a set of specialized headphones, make her a distinctive figure among her peers. She has been given the epithet The Tempest Phoenix or Young Tempest Phoenix, a title that reflects her exceptional mastery of high-speed combat techniques.

The foundation of Charles's character lies in her difficult past. She was once a poor orphan living on the streets before being adopted by Marks Spencer, a high-ranking official within the Chevalier. It was he who discovered her high compatibility rate with Stigmata, the biological implants that grant Pandora their powers. This history profoundly shapes her worldview. She holds an absolute belief that the few must be sacrificed for the good of the majority and that the Chevalier and its orders must be followed without question. For Charles, Pandora are tools whose purpose is to protect humanity, and personal feelings or individual justice have no place in that mission. This ideology is a direct reflection of her adoptive father's teachings, and she is fiercely loyal to him, often lashing out at anyone who might criticize him.

In terms of personality, Charles initially presents herself as calm, collected, and dismissive of what she sees as childish behaviour from other Pandora. She is known to use provocative nicknames for her powerful peers, such as calling Chiffon Fairchild Ms. Monster and Roxanne Elipton Zombie Girl or Undersea. Despite this front, she is revealed to be emotionally unstable and possesses a deep-seated inferiority complex that she conceals behind a self-assured and often confrontational façade. Her anger is easily stoked during battles, and she is particularly sensitive about her small stature, threatening violence to anyone who calls her a halfling brat.

Her role in the story is primarily as a foil and antagonist during the E-Pandora Project Arc and the subsequent E-Pandora Rebellion Arc. She is called upon to help manage a dangerous experiment involving E-Pandora, an event that goes horribly wrong and leads to her first major confrontation. During the rebellion, she stands firmly with the Chevalier, opposing Elizabeth Mably and her group, who fight to protect the E-Pandora from being treated as expendable sacrifices. For Charles, the E-Pandora are an acceptable price to pay for the world's safety, making her ideological clash with Elizabeth a central conflict.

Charles's key relationships are defined by her beliefs and past. Her most important bond is with her adoptive father, Marks Spencer, whose absolute authority she never questions. She is typically accompanied by her Limiter, Citroen, who supports her in combat. She holds deep animosity and a lack of trust towards other top-tier Pandora, particularly Roxanne Elipton and Elizabeth Mably, with whom she has a fierce rivalry. Her battle with Elizabeth is a direct confrontation of their opposing philosophies, one of absolute duty versus protection of the weak.

Development is most apparent during her fight with Elizabeth. As she is pushed to her limits, her backstory is revealed, and her emotionally unstable nature becomes fully exposed. Her speech during the battle lays bare the trauma of her childhood abandonment and how it forged her ironclad belief in the necessity of sacrifice. While she is defeated by Elizabeth, this encounter forces a deeper exploration of her character and the motivations that drive her actions.

As a fighter, Charles is exceptionally gifted. Her signature ability is an advanced version of the Tempest Turn called the Tempest Typhon. This technique allows her to create up to ten copies of herself, which she can control with precise rhythm and coordination. She often uses the music playing through her headphones to set the tempo for her attacks, shifting between different musical pieces to alter her fighting style and enhance her speed and agility. When facing powerful opponents, she deploys her Volt Weapon, Vibrato Hell, a pair of large knuckle knife-style trench knives. With this weapon, she increases her offensive power, demonstrating formidable resilience and speed, as seen when she single-handedly defeated a Nova-form E-Pandora with minimal exhaustion.
